Stampin’ Up Display Stamper 2014 Submission

So, every year I go to the Stampin’ Up convention… and every year I’m blown away by the amazing ideas and inspiration on all the different display boards.  (To see what I’m talking about, here are a few past posts I’ve done showing the display boards.)  Well, this year they are doing a call for display board stampers and to throw your hat in the ring, you need to pull together some of your best/favorite projects and put them together in one post to show your style and ability.  So, I thought it would be a fun way to flip through my past projects and put them together to share with you here.  And maybe they will love them too and I’ll get to share even more ideas on a display board at the Stampin’ Up Convention 2014!

oh, and PS – if you love the idea of checking out all the display boards, don’t forget that anyone who joins Stampin’ Up as a demonstrator right now will get free registration to convention this summer!  So, you just get yourself to Salt Lake City, and you can be blown away by inspiration for FREE!  Yay!  Email me at jennifer@nwstamper.com for more details if you are interested or check out this page to learn more about the perks of being a demonstrator!

This was so hard for me to narrow down and decide which scrapbook page to show.  I think my favorite layout may actually be this older one, but I figured the one I’d show here is this –

Or maybe it is just that these photos always make me smile!

Ok, this is where I don’t make and post nearly enough.  So here is what I decided was the nicest from things I actually designed myself – instead of flat out copies of what other people had created. Smile

Awww.  So much fun to walk down memory lane.  I hope you enjoyed the ideas and inspiration. Smile

  • A Masculine Card with Six Sided Sampler

A Masculine Card with Six Sided Sampler

Quick, name a stamp set that you just had to have but have since used once – or not at all!  For me, that has been the Six Sided Sampler stamp set.  I saw lots of cool things done with this set and I loved the hexagon punch that coordinated, so I picked it up last fall.  and I think I’ve used it about twice!  Thankfully, my friend Sarah Naber came to my rescue with this awesome inspiration that is great for guys or gals!

You know me, I love clean and simple cards – especially if they have lots of great details that are subtle but really add to the card.  And boy does she deliver!

It is a little hard to see in the first picture, but I like how she stamped the Cherry Cobbler cardstock with the Woodgrain stamp  and then she embossed the Island Indigo cardstock with the Alphabet Press embossing folder

Add a touch of Linin Thread for one last bit of texture.  Such a great color combination (Crushed Curry, Cherry Cobbler, Island Indigo, Crumb Cake) and use of those hexagons.  I think I have some inspiration to play with again!

  • Masculine Monday with Burlap, Woodgrain, and Word Bubbles!

Masculine Monday with Burlap, Woodgrain, and Word Bubbles!

I know many of us struggle with masculine cards.  I often find it so easy to reach for my flowers and rhinestones and pinks and whatnot; but when I need to make a card for a guy, those go-to items suddenly don’t seem to be quite the right fit.  Well, as luck would have it, today over on the Stylin’ Stampin’ Inkspiration blog, they are sharing some cards for Masculine Monday (and WOW are there some stunners!)  So, I wanted to participate with the design team and I wanted a guy card for my upcoming card class at the Scrapyard Chicks Spring Workshop, so I grabbed some burlap ribbon, some scraps of paper, and got to work!

Can I just say… I LOVE how this turned out.  It has a lot of fun touches to it without being super over the top or fussy.

The class I’m teaching in April focuses on 6 different techniques and for this card, I was showing off a neat different way to use your embossing folders…. as a stamp!  That is right, that grainy background on the card base – it is actually stamping using the Woodgrain embossing folder.

    So how does that work?

    1. You take your ink pad and slide it along the raised side of your embossing folder.
    2. Close the embossing folder over your card front so the ink is where you want it (basically, make it look like you are about to run it through the Big Shot)
    3. Do NOT actually run it through the Big Shot, instead use your bone folder to burnish the embossing folder and impress the ink onto your card base
    4. Open up the folder and admire your stamping work. Smile

The other think I really liked about this card was the mixing and matching of the word bubbles.  I stamped the “Hey There” with the Just Sayin’ stamp set and then cut it out with the Word Bubbles framelits (and yes, get the bundle!  They are both cute Winking smile).

But then I needed something more, so I grabbed some of the Gold Foil paper and cut out a different word bubble shape from the framelits.  Now, when you look at the paper that now has a word bubble sized hole in it, you will see that the framelit die embossed a faint line from the outer edge of the die (as opposed to the inner edge of the die where the cutting occurred).  So in this case, you can use that faint line as a cutting guideline and cut along that share to give you this cool metallic word bubble outline!

Oh, and I actually did emboss the Chocolate Chip paper with my embossing folder… I like the contrast of the stamped woodgrain and the embossed woodgrain.

So, what do you think?  I really liked how it turned out and can’t wait to share it at the workshop in a month!

  • My Favorite Banner Card Yet!

    My Favorite Banner Card Yet!

I just realized this morning that I hadn’t shared this card yet and I love it so much that I figured I needed to fix that!

This is my favorite card yet that I’ve made with the Sale-a-Bration set Banner Blast and I know a lot of it is the color… and the bling… and the sentiment.  Ahhh, don’t you just love it when a card comes together for you?!  Smile

Isn’t Bermuda Bay and Basic Black a GORGEOUS color combination??  I just loved the colors and so I wanted to keep the whole card to those tones.

From the sentiment that I love from the See Ya Later stamp set – “I don’t believe it’s your birthday.  You don’t look any older than you did last year.”  to the clean white background to show off the banners.

Now, I don’t know why it took this long for me to think of stamping one of the Banner Blast pennants onto colored cardstock… for some reason I kept only stamping a colored ink onto white cardstock.  But look at how great the black ink looks on the Smoky Slate cardstock:

I also connected the banner by adding rhinestones instead of bakers twine or some other line.  Just the right amount of glitz.

Yes, both of these stamps sets are only available during Sale-a-Bration, so don’t forget there is only 1 week left to get them free with a $50 order!  Shop online and then pick out your favorite free item(s) and they will appear in your box!

  • A Rugged Thank You Card

    A Rugged Thank You Card

As I was working on Thank You cards recently, I decided to take a break from all the flowers and pinks that I seemed to be using lately and try to come up with a card that could be useful for a guy or a girl.  I wanted to use my new Starburst Sayings stamp set and framelits and so I grabbed a few stamps and ink colors and started mixing and matching.

Turns out, I really liked the combination of Elegant Eggplant, Garden Green, So Saffron, and Island Indigo…. what do you think?

I stamped and cut out two of the images and then cut out an extra piece of cardstock with a bigger starburst shape.  And just to add a bit of something to the cardstock piece, I decided to grab my Chalk pen to add a some faux stitching.

Oh and my favorite accessory for more masculine cards – Burlap Ribbon!  I love the rugged texture it provides.  So glad it got carried over from the holiday catalog!

  • Dress Shirt Card for Dad

You would think that for all the stamping classes I run and projects I make for swapping and my blog, I would always be prepared for holidays.  Ha!  They sneak up on me like my 3 yr old when I think he is taking a nap and jump out at me at the last minute.  Thankfully, I got a head start this year and have a card all ready for Dad when I see him on Sunday.

I’ve been dying to try out those cool dress shirt cards and thought this would be a perfect excuse to try one out.  My first attempt left me with a shirt that covered the entire front of the card, but I wasn’t feeling it.  So, I adjusted my measurements until I came up with this:

The shirt was super simple to make… you just take a rectangle out of cardstock and cut two slits in from each side and fold down the flaps to make the collar.  Here are the dimensions I used for this card:

    image

I wanted a little bit of texture and so I grabbed some of my Pool Party Core’dintations cardstock for the shirt.  Normally I sand down this paper but I liked it for that subtle texture it provided.

For the rest of the shirt, I hand drew and cut the tie.  I didn’t realize that most people when they create these cards, have a template they have created for themselves for the tie!  So, I made myself a template and hoped it didn’t look too lopsided. Smile

Add a few silver mini brads and ta-da!  The shirt is done!

    Card supplies used:
    Stamps – Delightful Dozen
Ink – Island Indigo, Tangerine Tango marker
Paper – Whisper White cardstock, Island Indigo cardstock, Pool Party Core’dinations cardstock, Quatrefancy specialty designer series paper
Accessories – Big Shot, Stripes embossing folder, Piercing tool, Silver mini brads, Paper snips

So if you need a quick Father’s Day card idea, try this one out.  It is fast and easy, and quickly customizable to any colors or patterns you want!

Give it a try and then stop by my facebook page and let me know how yours turned out!  And let me know if you come up with a better way to do the tie other than freestyle!

  • Just Wanted to Say You’re Amazing!

No seriously, you are! As I think back to how my life has evolved and changed over the last few years – between major moves and babies and family adventures; I love that I’ve always had my friends and stamping community there for support and to keep me sane!  From friends in facebook groups to my fellow Stampin’ Up! demos, I always feel like I have somewhere to turn when I need support or a pick-me-up.

And you are part of that stamping family & community and for every layout you make, project you share, card you send; you are making the day that much brighter.  And so I think you are amazing!

You're Amazing Masculine card with bleaching

And just a little close up for those of you curious about the paper… this card is from my Misting & Masking technique class and we used bleach in a spritz bottle to spray some Marina Mist cardstock to get this cool look.  Then layouer our sentiment over the top in vellum so you can see it peeking through for a fun effect.

    Close up of bleaching technique

So think about who has been amazing to you in your life and take a minute to tell them!  Send them a card or just give them an extra hug.  You’ll brighten their day like they brighten yours. Smile

  • Birthday Celebration with a Sketched Birthdays Sneak Peek

Today is my hubby’s birthday!  So, first off:

    Happy Birthday, Scott!

After being together for 12 1/2 years, we’ve gone through a lot of changes and growing (though he will tell you that it was mostly me that had the growing to do! ha ha!)  But now he is the one getting old Smile  and so I guess the jokes on him!

So, today my mind is on birthdays so I thought I would share a birthday card I made recently.  This one was actually for my dad (his birthday was last week, so he’s seen this card already… don’t want to spoil the surprise for Scott’s card because he actually does see my blog when I least expect it!)

    Sketched Birthdays Birthday card

Psst – don’t recognize the stamp set?  That is because it is a NEW stamp set that is coming out May 31st!  This Sketched Birthdays stamp set has a number of images all related to birthdays in this same style of drawing.  I have to admit, I think it is cool because it is different from what I’ve had to play with for a while.

Plus it is great for masculine cards!

Sketched Birthdays Birthday card close up

It’s a bit hard to see, but all I did was sponge around the large circle punch out with Early Espresso to get the darker shading and then cut out the Happy Birthday with the Banner Framelits and popped those up on dimensionals.

So, put it on your wishlist and watch for it to come out May 31st!

  • Feels Good Masculine Card with Sycamore Street

Who is with me that it is easy to make a “girly” card but hard to come up with a “guy” card?

I know I’m not the only one and so for a recent card class I decided to show how you could use some of the items from the Spring catalog and Sale-a-Bration flyer to make a masculine card.  And YES you CAN use ribbon for a guy!  See:

I used the Sycamore Street designer paper to make simple blocks for my base design.

Tip: Use Stampin’ Dimensionals to pop up your designer paper blocks for extra impact.

Then for the sentiment I grabbed my new Feels Good stamp set and then roughed up the edges of the stamped image and the Baja Breeze mat.  Because rough edges are manly, right?  Smile

Then it still needed something so I grabbed a button and some ribbon for a little bit of flair.  No bows, so I was still doing ok!

Now I’ll admit, the first version of this card actually used the Silver Designer Buttons and the Natural Trim ribbon from the Spring catalog and I kind of like them better.

    What do you think?

And of course, finish it up with a matching envelope by adding a little strip of coordinating designer paper to the bottom of the front of your envelope.  And ta da, you are done!

So what do you think?  Does this count as a masculine card or just not a girly card?  Smile

Hop on over to my facebook page and let me know what you consider traits of a masculine card.  I’ll take the ideas as a challenge to come up with more fun masculine cards to share in the next few weeks!

  • Faux Quilted International Bazaar Thank You

With today’s card, I was trying for something that could be “manly” or at least not pink and frilly.  So, while flipping through my designer papers, I thought the International Bazaar pack would be a great one for the guys in my life.

I mixed and matched the papers from the pack in strips to glue down at an angle.  I cut a piece of scratch cardstock that was 2.5” wide and then cut my designer paper strips to 3” long.  Then I was able to glue them down at an angle so that the top left corner of the dsp strip was at the edge of my scratch paper on the left side and the bottom right corner of the dsp strip was at the edge of my scratch paper on the right side.  Then, after all the paper is glued down, I could just trim off the edges and have my pattern good to go!

My sentiment uses the new Windows Framelits – so glad I got these!  The one thing that did surprise me though was that the smallest frame is much smaller than the next size frame.  But then once you are on the second smallest frame, they all are each slighter bigger than the one before.

And finally, I thought I’d leave you with the “girly” version I came up with when I was experimenting with my design.  I used the retired Everyday Enchantment paper and some Peach Parfait for a brighter look.  Kind of cute, huh?
