A Card and a Tag with Touches of Texture

Alright, need some inspiration to get your morning going after that exciting Bonus days news?  I thought I’d share a couple projects I got to make while on the Stampin’ Up Incentive Trip in May.  We had the fun and novel experience doing make and take projects on a cruise ship.  These were some of my fun tablemates while I stamped.

    2016-05-27 09.40.05

We got to use the Touches of Texture stamp set and make a couple cards and a tag.  Here is the first card we made…

It is a great quick and easy card since it doesn’t take a lot of supplies but still is fun and interesting.  Now, I’ll admit, this stamp set is one that I totally passed over in the catalog.  You see, I don’t always know what to do with “collage-style” stamp sets.  When you look at the stamp images, they just look like a bunch of random images.  But these projects showed me that the great thing about these sets is that they are designed for you to mis-mash together and it pretty much always looks good!  Now that is an idea I can get behind!  Stamping like a crazy woman and not having my messes not only look intentional, but artsy?  Sign me up! Smile

We stamped a few images from the set for the flower and background splatter.  And if you look at the cardbase, there is another subtle background image too!  Add a strip of the Moroccan designer paper to the top, some Thick baker’s twine, and a sentiment and you are done!  Easy peasy!

And now for a project that looks super fancy, but is even easier!  A Touches of Texture gift tag!

All you have to do is cut a 2” strip (any length will do) from the Moroccan designer paper and punch the end with the Scalloped Tag Topper punch.  Stamp a few flowers from the Touches of Texture stamp set and set aside.

Grab another 2” strip of a different pattern from the Moroccan designer paper and punch BOTH ENDS using the Scalloped Tag Topper punch for a cool background shape.  Stamp you sentiment and punch out with the 2” circle punch and adhere some banners made from yet another Moroccan designer paper pattern and some gold sequins.  Glue them all together and you are done!  But wouldn’t it be a pretty addition to any gift or even the front of a card?  Give it a shot and let me know what you think!

  • New Weekly Deals & Extra Holiday Catalog Paper Samplers

I can’t believe we are down to the last 2 days of 2014!  I always think I’m going to get so much done during the Christmas “break” but turns out between Christmas, 3 household birthdays, and visiting family the time just flies by!

For example, while rearranging and reorganizing my craft room (again), I found extra Holiday Catalog paper samplers.  I had planned to do something with them a month ago but totally forgot.

    2014-09-05 14.05.58

See we prepped a bunch for my Stampin’ Bingo night this fall and had a couple people cancel at the last minute which left me with extras.  Which got put in my cupboard… and out of sight, out of mind.

  • Where Do You Go for Inspiration for Your Cards?

Today is my day for sharing some fun ideas and inspiration over on the Stylin’ Stampin’ Inkspiration blog.  And so I thought I would share one unusual place I have found for getting new mojo juices flowing…. my mailbox!  Crate & Barrel ads to be exact!

So, I show two samples using two different ads on the design team blog but I thought I’d give you a sampling of one of the cards I created.  Here is the card –

And here is the inspiration –

    Do you see any similarities?

I just loved the colors in this ad and as I started putting together my card, I kept pulling design elements that caught my eye and putting them into the card (like the rivets on the couch as an example).

I love the idea of using “found” inspiration like these ads; but I’ve gotten inspired and snapped cell phone pictures while shopping in Target and other stores.  It gives you a jumping off point without guiding you to make the exact same thing other people are making.

And if you want to see more, check out the SSInkspiration blog for one more Crate and Barrel ad and a totally different look for a card (think gold, black, and curry!)

  • Easter Bunny Punch Art Card

I finally participated in a sketch challenge, only to realize that I totally missed the deadline. :)  Oh, well.  I still LOVE my card I made.  I was so excited to be able to come up with a fun Easter card even though I had pretty much no Easter stamp sets.  What do you think?  Isn’t this bunny adorable?!

I made this card with my son in mind and had fun pulling papers, stamps, and punches to create an easy yet super fun Easter bunny card.  I had seen different cards out there using the Nursery Suite specialty designer paper for Easter because it has a couple patterns with bunnies on them. Let me tell you, that was one of those smacks to the forehead kind of moments! I was so fixated on this paper being “baby” paper that I didn’t even think about how it is so fabulous for so many other projects.  Just you watch, I’ll be pulling it out a lot more in the future.

Then I saw this punch art bunny on Jan Tink’s blog and knew I just HAD to make one myself!  So, I combined the paper, this bunny, and the Stamping 411 sketch from last week to make it.  So fun!

The bunny is made by punching 3 small ovals (one for the feet and two for the ears), one 1-1/4” circle for the body, one 1” circle for the head, and one small flower punch from the Punch Pack for the tail.

The ribbon is just a piece of Crumb Cake seam binding ribbon (have I told you how much the seam binding ribbon rocks?) that I folded in half and then knotted.

Make your own Easter bunny!  Get the supplies you need from the online store here, or grab the paper and punches you have and play around!  Have fun!

Don’t forget!  TODAY is the last day of my Tax-Free weekend!

  • Plane and Simple Father’s Day Card

I’m on a yahoo group called Late Night Stampers and each week they post a challenge for you to complete that week.  This week the challenge was to create a masculine card.  Well, I often fall back on Lovely as a Tree as a “masculine” set since I don’t have many stamps that are explicitly for the guys.  But then I thought of the Plane and Simple stamp set that just came out in the Occasions Mini.

Plane & Simple Stamp Set - by Stampin' Up!

The style of this set is this cool mix of aged and masculine without the need for overt testosterone (like many of the grilling or motercycle stamps – which are not bad images, just less of my style).  Plus add in that my hubby and I are both pilots and I come from a family of pilots going back to my grandparents – and so you know I’m going to be a sucker for stamp sets that have airplanes in them. 🙂

Anyway, enough about me…. how about a card?

I think my favorite thing about this card is the popped up airplane on the Whisper White cardstock that has been sponged with Baja Breeze ink so that it looks like it is in the clouds.  It was totally worth the cutting it in my opinion. :)  And the cutting wasn’t really as bad as you might think either.  You just want to make sure you have a pair of scissors with smaller blades so it is easy to manuever (some kind of paper snips like this).

Check out this stamp set and the rest of the great sets from the Occasion Mini online here.

  • Quick and Easy Glimmer Hearts Valentine

If you’ve read my newsletter, you got to hear me go on about how I love the new Glimmer paper and how I have all my fingers and toes crossed that we will see more of this in more colors!  Its true, I love this stuff!  So, I had to share it with others in my workshops so they could see it too.  I’ve seen so many cute projects with this paper but one of the techniques I think is so fun is this peek-a-boo design.

In this card, I cut a strip of the Real Red Glimmer paper at 1-1/4” x 3” and then cut a piece of Whisper White cardstock at 3/4” x 3”.  I then punched out three hearts from the Whisper White paper and then adhered it to my strip of Glimmer paper.  I free hand punched the hearts by punching the center heart first.  Then I lined up my punch along each short edge of the white strip and tried to horizontally align the hearts.  Add some Blushing Bride designer paper and a Basic Grey mat for a fun and quick card:

Tip:  Due to the texture of the Glimmer Paper, glue stick does not hold very well to it.  So, for a project like this, I would use your tape runner or probably more easy would be a liquid glue like the Multipurpose Adhesive.  These stronger adhesives will hold up much better long term.

    Glimmer Hearts Valentine Recipe:
    Stamps:
    Teeny Tiny Wishes
    Ink:  Real Red Classic
Paper:  Real Red CS, Basic Grey CS, Whisper White CS, Real Red Glimmer Paper, Blushing Bride DSP (Hostess set)
Accessories:  Small Heart Punch, Multipurpose Adhesive

  • Wonderful Friend Vintage Card

Today I thought I’d share another card I came up with while playing with ideas for the Valentine’s workshop.  I was figuring that not everyone would need four red and pink cards and so I was trying to come up with some more non-traditional cards.  That way they had something for a friend or husband that could be used for Valentine’s or really any time of the year.  In this case, I used one of my new favorite stamp sets – Wonderful Favorites.  I even won this stamp set which is even cooler!  Any who….this was my attempt at more neutral:

Don’t you just love how, when you spread the tines of the Vintage Trinkets brad, it looks like leaves on the flower!  I kept the card simple with the muted colors and let the designer paper and embellishments do the work.  The only other extra touch I added was to sponge Soft Suede ink along the long edge of the Very Vanilla/Elegant Soiree paper.

What do you think?  Would this work for a non-traditional Valentine?

    Wonderful Friend Recipe:

  • Love You Much Valentine

I’m so excited to be doing a Valentine’s themed workshop next week and so I’ve been busy getting the cards designed and ready to go.  I knew when we started talking Valentine’s Day, that I wanted to use this stamp set, Love You Much.  So, this is one of the first cards I created for the event.

Because there is one stamp that stamps the three different hearts at the same time and the Heart to Heart punch will punch all three out at the same time, this card can come together pretty quickly.

Heart-To-Heart Punch - by Stampin' Up!  image

I stamped the Love You Much image in Cherry Cobbler and then went over the stem in Old Olive using a marker and then filled in the word Love with Pink Pirouette.  To add a little extra fun texture, I also cut an extra piece of Pink Pirouette CS and ran it through the BigShot using the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder.  Then I just glued it straight onto the card base.  Kind of fun, no?

I hope folks at the workshop have a lot of fun with this card. Smile  If you are in the Bay Area and would like to make this card yourself, I’d love to show you and your friends during your own free workshop!  Email me a jennifer@nwstamper.com to save your date.

    Love You Much Valentine Recipe:
    Stamps:
    Love You Much
Ink:  Cherry Cobbler Classic Ink pad, Whisper White Craft Ink pad, Pink Pirouette marker, Old Olive marker, Cherry Cobbler marker
Paper:  Pink Pirouette CS, Cherry Cobbler, CS, Chocolate Chip CS, Whisper White CS
Accessories:  Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder, BigShot, Heart to Heart punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

  • Bitty Button Friendship Card

I recently wanted to make a card for a stamping friend so I could show her the new, fabulous seam binding ribbon (seriously, I can’t get enough of this stuff right now – I love how it is delicate and soft like silk yet more opaque than organza.)  So, I put together this sweet and simple card for her.

The bow is not tied and instead the loops are held together by a rhinestone brad, which is then punched through the Crumb Cake cardstock.  Had I been thinking before I added the bow, I would have loved to use my Color Spritzer and added some splattering of Soft Suede ink to the Crumb Cake cardstock first, but I guess I’ll have to save that for next time.  So, instead I added some Bitty Buttons covering the matching shapes punched out of the Botanical Gazette designer series paper.

Tip: When you are using matching paper shapes with clear buttons, I find I get the best results by adding a light layer of Crystal Effects to the back of the button and then using that as the adhesive to stick the button to the paper.  You don’t need a lot of Crystal Effects, but you want just enough lightly cover the entire side of the button.  This gives you a perfectly clear adhesive with out those weird shadows you can get with glue dots or tapes and other adhesives.

This card was centered around the pretty Rose Red Seam Binding ribbon.  But I bet it would be great with the other 6 colors of Seam Binding ribbon.  Which color is your favorite?
See all the Seam Binding colors here in the online store.

    Bitty Button Friend Card recipe:
    Stamps:
    Curvy Verses
    Ink:  Soft Suede
Paper:  Whisper White CS, Crumb Cake CS, Botanical Gazette DSP
Accessories:  Bitty Buttons, Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack, Rhinestone Brads, Rose Red Seam Binding Ribbon, Scallop edge Punch, Crystal Effects

  • Trying Out The Latest Embossing Folder–Framed Tulips!

I’ve seen the different ways some folks have rigged their embossing folders to allow for texture around the edge of their card with a spotlight in the center.  It usually looks really cool and so I was excited to see a new embossing folder in the Occasion mini that takes all the work out of doing exactly that.  Plus, with the extra pop the texture gives your project, you can totally get away with a single layer card that looks fancy at the same time. Smile

In this card, I embossed the Whisper White cardstock and then used a Pink Pirouette marker to add some color between the outer embossed frame and the bases of the embossed tulips.  Then I used that Pink Pirouette marker and an Old Olive marker to color in the Because I Care hostess stamp set.  I then took a Regal Rose marker and added some darker pink spots to the flower blossoms for some extra depth.  I used Early Espresso for the sentiment and then finished it off with some Rhinestone bling.

This whole card can be created in 5 min but looks way prettier than one of those smiling monkey cards you find at the grocery store!

Tip: If you are using a clear mount stamp set for this card, you can fit the sentiment and the flower stamp on one clear block.  This lets you get the image positioning just right before you stamp and so you don’t have to worry about stamping just right after you’ve already stamped one image and no need for extra tools like the Stamp-a-ma-jig!
