Birthday Card Kit and Organizer

April 6, 2011 under 3D projects, classes

Can I share with you this project that we are making in my Birthday Card Kit and Organizer class this weekend?  Isn’t it such a fun and cheery birthday collection?

I had so much fun when I made this sample and I loved all the fun but simple ideas that we use on the different cards.  What you are seeing above is a fun desktop organizer with two storage compartments.  The front compartment is perfect for holding gift tags and 3×3 cards.  The top compartment is exactly right for holding standard sized cards and envelopes.  There is even a special spot for storing a coordinating pen!

All of the pieces of this project use the fun Create a Cupcake stamp set and the Build a Cupcake punch.  In the class we’ll be making the box, the matching pen, 2 full sized cards (with envelopes), 4 3×3 cards (with envelopes), and 4 gift tags using this punch set, some of the chunky glitter, ribbon, and some extra punches.  I’m so looking forward to it because even though I know it is a lot, I know folks will enjoy and love having so many items ready for last minute birthday gifts and parties.

If you are in the Bay Area and would like to come join us on Sunday afternoon for this class, let me know and I’d love to add you to the rsvp list!  Email me at jennifer@nwstamper.com.

But, I know many of you are from all over the country and even around the world and I thought you might like to make one of these projects yourself.  So, I’m creating kits for you as well! These class kits include:

  • All the cardstock and designer paper precut and scored for the cards, pen, and box
  • Punched out pieces to complete all of the projects
  • Ribbon and fibers required for the projects
  • 2 standard sized envelopes and 4 small square envelopes
  • A pen ready for customizing
  • Instruction sheets for all included projects (so you can make them over and over and over again)
  • Shipping is included
  • All for only $25 shipped!  And let me tell you, you will be getting lots of pieces for these fun projects

You just need some adhesive, glitter, and stamps as desired.  Due to Stampin’ Up! policy, I can’t prestamp any images for you but to help you out with that, if you get the kit and contact me to order any of the items not included in the kit, I will give you 10% off those items!  So, for example, you could get the stamp set and/or the chunky glitter at a discount!  I loved working on this project and I hope you do too!

Holiday Gift Tags and Gift Card Holders

December 7, 2010 under 3D projects, classes

Last friday I held a holiday class around gift tags and gift card holders.  I have to admit, while trying to get project ideas, I got so inspired that I had way to many projects I wanted to do with the class.  I managed to reign it in some, but I still ended up with a ton of little projects for everyone to do.  Thankfully no one was in a rush to get in and out and so we had a great time socializing and crafting.

So, if you are looking for some ideas for some fun ways to gift a gift card or easily make a ton of gift tags, here are what we made and hopefully they will give you ideas for your own creations. Smile

Gift Card Holders

Gift Tag TinOk, so the first thing we did was decorate one of the skinny tins currently found in the Clearance Rack.  This was intended as a container to hold the gift tags we were going to be making, but it also works well as a gift container to use during the holidays.  I did use some retired paper from last year’s holiday mini, but I just love how it looks on the front of the tin.

We also added a piece of designer series paper to the inside of the tin to give it a little more finished of a look.

Tip: when adhering your embellishments to the front of the tin, use Sticky Strip to ensure your decorations stay put long term.

Next we created two different gift card holders.  The first one was a simple folded pouch with a belly band for decoration.  The base paper is 3.5” x 9.75” and is scored at 3” and 7”.  I used the 3/4” circle punch to punch a half circle out of one end and then used sticky strip to adhere that flap down to the middle section of the base.  Wrap a piece of DSP around the folded up gift card holder and adhere the ends of the DSP together using Snail adhesive.  We decorated this holder using the Tags Til Christmas stamp set and the Decorative Label punch (currently on sale as a Handmade Holiday bundle for 20% off) and some adhesive back pearls.

Tip:  Did you realized that you can use the “Dec 25th” stamp from Tags Til Christmas and then cover up the date with the Modern Label punch?  In this case, we still used a Christmas sentiment, but you could make it into anything!  Got to love versatility!

For our last gift card holder, we made what I call the “booklet gift card holder”.  This pattern has been seen all over the internet and you’ll probably see a few different measurements out there.  I found that I liked the following measurements the best:
- Cut your base paper to be 4 1/4” x 11.
- Score at 3”, 5.5”, and 8”

Once you have your paper scored, fold it into a ‘W’ shape so that there is a shorter peak on the inside of your booklet.  Use your word window punch to cut out two “half-ovals” across the top of that shorter peak and then use the 3/4” circle punch to punch out a half circle in the middle.  Then, embellish the front, back, and insides to your hearts content using ribbon or fabric to tie your booklet closed.  For this project, we used the Candy Cane DSP and A Cute Christmas stamp set, stamping both on the outside and inside of the holder.  I also used a white gel pen to add the little white dots to the Bashful Blue scalloped circle on the front of the booklet.

Finally, after all that, we made some gift tags as well.  These were made almost entirely with the Tags Til Christmas stamp set with one tag using the Sweet Season set just for fun.
Some things you may not be able to see well in the picture:

  -  The ornament tag is actually a tag that flips open.  We folded over a piece of cardstock before stamping our ornament image. Then we punched out the ornament image making sure to have the crease of the folded paper showing in the opening of the punch (so that we were keeping the crease intact).

  -  We also used a two-way glue pen to add Dazzling Diamonds to the front of the ornament.

  -  The “do not open until christmas” tag was created by first stamping the image on a piece of paper and then punching it out using the 1 1/4” square punch.  You want to make sure the text is aligned at the bottom of your square punch.  Then we punched out a scallop square piece using scrap designer series paper and folded that scalloped square in half.  Finally adhere that folded scallop square to the top of your 1 1/4” square punch out and add some hemp thread to make it a hanger.

Well, I hope that gave you at least one new idea.  I’d love to have you join me at one of my classes in person, but if you are too far away, please come visit me at my blog again as I’ll be sharing the future projects here as well.  Until next time… Happy Stamping!

Quick and Easy – Yet Cute! – Holiday Cards

November 23, 2010 under Big Shot, Cards, classes

Last Saturday was my latest holiday Stamp-a-Stack.  Since I had a few folks who had been to my first class, I decided to shake things up and play with some new products and designs.  Turns out, I love these cards and had so much fun sharing them with my ladies.  So I thought I would share a couple of the cards with you today.  I’ll be posting the other two cards we made here this week and would love for you to stop back by and let me know what you think!

A Cute Christmas

If you follow me on Facebook, you’ve already seen this card since I posted it as a sneak peek on Saturday.  I originally created this card because I wanted to show off the cute glitter paper in the Candy Cane designer paper pack.  I thought that the stripes were a little much for me and since I didn’t know what I was going to do with the paper, I’d find a way to use it up for this class.  I also wanted a fast and easy card since I knew my designer fabric card was going to take some time.  Well, turns out I love how bright and cheery this card is and I love the stripes!  Guess I’ll be using this paper more than I thought. :)

Joyful Season Letterpress Card

This next card was an excuse to use the Letterpress plates.  One of my ladies had been curious about the Letterpress plates and so I thought I would give everyone a chance to try them out.

We used Craft Ink on textured Whisper White paper for the debossed image.  Then we spritzed the paper with Crumb Cake using the Color Spritzer tool.  If you haven’t used the Color Spritzer, it is a neat way to add splatters and spritzes of color on your paper.  I swear I feel like a wild and crazy artist when I stand over my paper and start squeezing this air gun all over the place. :)

joyful season card sm If you aren’t familiar with the letterpress dies, the way they work is that you ink up the raised image on the plastic plate using your ink pads (I personally love using the Craft Ink Spots).  Place your paper over the inked image, and run it all through your BigShot or other die cutting machine.  Your image is impressed into the paper and the ink is left behind in that impressed image.  Here is my attempt at taking a photo close up to show you what I mean.

More Fun Ideas for Crystal Effects

November 18, 2010 under Cards, classes, Techniques

Each month I hold a technique night focusing on some different product or crafting technique.  Well, this last Tuesday night we focused on Crystal Effects.  I think Crystal Effects is one of those products that I often forget on the shelf but when I pull it out and start playing around I have so much fun!  I took this evening to show some of the different ways you can use Crystal Effects starting with the simple:

Hello card In this case, we stamped the card and then added Crystal Effects over the butterfly image to create a fun 3D effect:

CE close up Similar to this idea, we also made some chipboard accents to use on a future project.  This was the thrifty person (aka hoarder) in me.  I saved the white cardboard piece that comes with our designer paper packages.  We adhered some DSP to the cardboard and then punched out a heart using the Small Heart punch.  Then we punched that out using a 1” Circle punch and also punched out a 1” circle of Poppy Parade cardstock.  Glue the Poppy Parade piece to the back of your chipboard and then fill in the cutout with Crystal Effects.  Its a fun way to make custom epoxy-like accents.

Epoxy AccentsNext, we added some sparkle to the place… cause who doesn’t like glitter with your pizza?  :)    (We were meeting at Round Table Pizza and only got a little bit of glitter on the table)  Coat the top of the brad with Crystal Effects and dip into some fine glitter to create your glitter brads.

glitter bradsNow, I will warn you, unlike our Glimmer Brads in the Holiday Mini, the glitter will tend to rub off a bit with these brads.  You want to shake off what you can when you first glitter them up and then be prepared for a little to flake off after its dried.  I think it is pretty enough to be worth it.  Oh, and when you are letting your brads dry after dipping them, just set them gently on the table with the prongs pointing up.  It won’t mess up your brads and then you can have your hands free to do other stuff while it dries.

We also used Crystal Effects as glue on the back of the clear Itty Bitty Buttons, using the matching Punch Pack to punch out paper in the same shape as the button.  I made this card a while back and used it as my sample.  But it shows you basically what we did.

friends forever buttons close up buttonsFinally, our last fun technique was the Stained Glass technique.  I love using this stamp set for this technique.  If you want to see details on how to do it, check out my post from last year.  But here is the card we made:

stained glass treeAnd yes, my tree ended up a little “artistic”. :)  I was showing how to color and paint on the Crystal Effects and when showing how you would attach the window sheet to the Whisper White paper once the Crystal Effects was dry, I accidentally put them together.  So, I now call it artistic shading.

It was a fun night and I loved seeing the creativity in the room.

Thanks for taking the time to view the projects we made.  I’d love to hear what your favorite use is for Crystal Effects.  Leave a comment sharing what tips and techniques you use, I’d love to hear from you!

Kicking it up with Interactive Scrapbooking

September 5, 2010 under classes, Promotions, scrapbooking, Techniques

At convention this year, I had the chance to participate in a class taught by Sherrill Graff on Interactive Scrapbooking.  It was one of those times when I found myself going, “WOW!” over something that was fairly easy but so cool.  So, when I got home, I knew I had to share it with others.  So, today I held an interactive scrapbooking class.  We made two 12×12 pages consisting of layering page protectors and filling them with designer paper.  It was so much fun and since everyone had picked different designer paper, it was cool to see how everyone put their pages together.

So, here is the first layout we did.

I loved this page because I thought the hinge using the Round Tab punch was so clever!  We cut a 9 1/2” x 11 inch piece of paper and glued that to our base 12×12 paper.  Then we punched 4 tab punches and folded them in half to make our hinges.  You glue half of the tab punchout to half of your 2nd punch out, then make the part that is not glued together (so it looks kind of like a mouth) glue it down to either side of your 6×6 page protector.

Then we did the mother of all interactive layouts!  This uses one 12×12 page protector and 5 6×6 page protectors.  Is like a mini-album in your scrapbook!

You adhere your 6×6 page protectors to the 12×12 page protector and then glue a 1”x6” piece of paper over the tab of plastic that has the holes for putting it in your album.  Its so fun because you can have elements from the lower pages be exposed on the right side when you first open to this page.  In my case, I have a curly label punch that says “Party Hearty” on page 2 and the CKC from page 3.  Here is what it looks like from the inside:

Too much fun!

And while we’re talking about fun and convention – did you hear that when you join the Stampin’ Up family you get this uber-cute tote bag for FREE!

Technique night – Masking and Reverse Masking

August 21, 2010 under Cards, classes, Techniques

Last night was my August technique night with my meetup group and we focused on masking and reverse masking.  For those of you not familiar with masking, this is the technique for using paper to cover (or mask) the area you don’t want to get inked.  So, in this first card we did, you stamp the colored cupcake on your paper and then stamp another copy of the cupcake on scratch paper.  Cut out the scrap cupcake and place over your original stamped image and then stamp your next cupcake, overlapping the scrap paper and your original image.  This gives the illusion of one cupcake being in front of the other without seeing the overlapping ink.   We also used the scrap cupcake to mask the frosting area when we stamped the candle so that you could choose the height of the candle and not have it overlap the top of the cupcake.

Next we did reverse masking.  This is where you cut out your scrap image and set your image aside and use the cut-out frame to let you add ink to the inside of the framed area.  In this case we sponged first and then while still keeping the frame in place, stamped our leaves images. This card was inspired by a card I found on the Stampin Up demo resource – Stampin Cconnection.  The origional was created by Allison Ohran

Finally we did one more card that combined both techniques.  We used reverse masking to make the sun and then placed the cut-out circle back on the sun and a scrap cutout of the treetop to mask the areas before sponging our sky.

Now, some tips:

Tip: When cutting out smaller shapes and circles, post-it notes work great for giving you something that can stick in place and then come up without leaving a mark.  For bigger shapes and frames, use a little bit of Dotto.  This adhesive lets you put your mask down and then pull it up an rub off any adhesive that gets left behind.

Tip: While I normally recommend stamping on Whisper White cardstock because it holds ink much better than standard white cardstock and computer paper, for the scrap image you are going to use for your mask, I would recommend in that case to use computer paper.  Because the paper is thinner, you tend to be able to get ink closer to the edge of your mask and so get a cleaner look.

A couple cards for my new Meetup group

June 19, 2010 under Cards, classes

Since I’m pretty new to the Bay area, I recently decided to start up a Meetup group as a way to meet new folks and find some other like-minded crafty people.  Today was our first meetup, and so I planned a couple cards for us to work on over pie at Marie Callendars.  Between work and vacation, I hadn’t had much of a chance this month to do much card making so it was a lot of fun to create some cards and get everything ready to share with folks today.  It also gave me a chance to use some of my retiring items so I can start making room for the new goodies coming out in a few weeks.

Here are the cards and if you happen to be in the Bay area, we’d love to have you come be a part of our group!

Trying out the BigShot – a card, a box, and the matchbox

April 9, 2009 under 3D projects, Big Shot, Cards, classes, Techniques

I wanted to put up a quick post before I had to run into work.  This week has gone by so fast and has seemed so busy, but the rest of the week should be more relaxing.  On Tuesday, I was hosting a Technique Night focused on using the BigShot.  Unfortunately, that night I had some folks cancel because of illness, unexpected time conflicts, delays, and getting lost, so it ended up not happening.   One the upside, my friend Jennifer recently decided she wanted to make a baby book for her daughter but had been overwhelmed by where to get started.  So, since she had come over, I helped her figure out what she needed.  She ended up deciding to get the Stampin Up! Baby Girl simply scrappin kit, and after looking at it more closely, I can’t wait for her to get it because I think it is going to be so stinking cute.  Then last night we went to Michaels and picked out an album to go with it.  So, I’m feeling good that we got something productive done.

So, since the Technique Night didn’t happen this week, I rescheduled it for next Tuesday.  I’m trying something different this time.  I created a meetup group called Portland Card Makers recently and since some of those folks were going to come, I thought I would try out a public location that most people could easily get to and find parking.  So, I ended up finding a Round Table pizza that had side sections with long tables that you could reserve for free.  It may seem odd crafting in a pizza place, but I’ve been to an event at a Fuddrucker’s so, hopefully this will work out.  I guess we’ll see!

Here are some samples I was playing with for the BigShot.  The first is a card using the Top Note die.  It was an interesting and different way to create a card since the inside of the card is the inside of the Top Note die.  Then, I was going to do a box/basket using the Scallop Envelope die and some ribbon.  The last thing we were going to do at the technique night was a card using texture plates and an embosslit but I’m reworking that card right now.  And then finally I thought I would share a box I made with the new Matchbox die.  It was sooo easy to make since everything is cut and scored for you.  You only need to use one piece of sticky strip or snail and its together!  Plus the die punches out the label that I stamped and put on top.  Easy peasy.
