  • Spooky Fun Halloween Treat Bag–A Quick and Easy Idea!

Spooky Fun Halloween Treat Bag–A Quick and Easy Idea!

Well, I don’t know about you, but turns out the end of summer and the start of the school year is actually a really busy time of year.  Who knew?!  (Probably about a billion parents out there, but this one was obliviously unaware how as your kids grow out of toddlerhood, things get crazier, and not calmer).  Smile

    imag1009

Well, now that we are finally settling back in our routines, I figured it was time to dust off the ol’ blog because boy oh boy, I’ve been creating some fun projects that I can’t wait to share with you.  We are crafters, creating is fun… sharing with people who understand crafting is even more fun!

First off, I’m also going to let folks know that I’m also getting back into sharing with my newsletter too!  In fact, later today I hope to have my next one out with a NEW free project tutorial, Holiday Catalog Product Sampler details, and more!  So, if you aren’t already on the list, make sure you get signed up today – get on the list here.

Secondly, since I haven’t mentioned it here before, if you didn’t know… the Stampin’ Up Holiday Catalog went live this month.  There are so many awesome bundles and cute projects in there, that you totally should check it out.  If you have ordered from me in the last year, you should have gotten a copy mailed to you already.  If you didn’t get your copy, or would like a copy and don’t have a demonstrator you already order with, just let me know at jennifer@nwstamper.com and I’ll get you all set up!

    2016 Holiday Catalog cover

    2016 Holiday Catalog PDF

Alright, want to see a project using new Holiday Catalog goodies?  Well, let me share with you one of the projects I created for my Northwest Stamp & Share demonstrator event at the end of August.  This was an event with 60+ demonstrators from the Northwest area where we share inspiration, business ideas, and just formed more community bonds.  It was great.  Well, I created 4 make & take projects including this one:

I used the Petite Cafe Bags from the Annual catalog as my base bag.  They are cute and easy, plus they are food-safe on the inside so you can drop in any treat you have.  Plus you can stamp on the front like I did with the pumpkins from the Spooky Fun stamp set from the Holiday Catalog.

Then it is just a matter of making the front cute too!  I just used a couple pieces of paper and a stamp set and it turned out like this!

I had one of the new Halloween Night designer paper pieces that I cut into a 1 1/2″ strip and punched the end with the Banner Triple punch.  Then I cut a 2″ strip of Pumpkin Pie cardstock and stamped fun halloween faces from that same Spooky Fun stamp set before punching the end with that same Banner Punch.

TIP: When making a background design with those halloween faces, put all three on the clear block at the same time and then you can treat it like one bigger stamp for faster stamping.

Adhere everything to the front of the bag and then wrap a long length of the Halloween Night baker’s twine around the top and tie a bow for a cute final touch.

And while this is fun as a Halloween back, you could easily change up the stamp set and the pattern paper to make it a Christmas or Birthday treat back.  Think about what event you need a treat bag for and use the same layout and it will be perfect for any occasion!

  • You Are Awesome! Say it with Marquee Messages

Maybe it is because I grew up in the 80s and 90s, but I just love the word “Awesome” and love to use that to tell people how much I think of them. Smile  So, when I got the Marquee Messages stamp set and saw it had the phrase “you are awesome”… well, I knew it was perfect for me!

This is one of those stamp sets that there is one main image and then a few different sentiments to change up what you can say in this set.  And honestly, sometimes working with a set that doesn’t make me feel like I have to get wild and creative with how I stamp my images is actually pretty freeing.  I can just relax and enjoy my stamping without having to think too hard! Smile  So, for this card, I had fun playing with colors and little details pieces.

For example, I stamped my main image onto my Whisper White piece in Memento Black and then stamped it again onto a piece of scrap So Saffron so that I could cut out and pop up my arrow.  Just something simple as popping it up makes a BIG difference.  I did more paper piecing by stamping again onto a scrap piece of Sahara Sand cardstock and layering that down directly to the page for the “Awesome” sentiment.  And then stamped again on scrap So Saffron so I could cut out three of the little star shines.  Simple pieces that add a lot to your card.

And what is a marquee without some sparkly lights?  I added some quick and easy bling by grabbing my Gold Glitz Dazzling Details glitter glue and dotting each of the marquee lights for a fun sparkly effect.  You can also use mini-rhinestones or pearls (the smallest size in the packs sold by Stampin’ Up) but I was going for economical, since I could make a bajillion cards using one little $2.50 tube of glitter glue. Smile

Add some extra hints of color by coloring in the main image on the Whisper White cardstock (I used Peekaboo Peach on those horizontal bars on the left, and So Saffron on the shaded part behind the “Awesome” sentiment).  Then just matted it all with Basic Black cardstock on a Peekaboo Peach cardbase.

I made this card a while ago, but now after sharing it here, I know just some special folks in my life who I need to remind them that I think they are awesome.  Think about your friends and family…. who needs to hear that they are awesome to you?

  • Note of Thanks with the Detailed Floral Thinlit die

I’m back!  My family finally did what you are supposed to do during Summer Vacation and took an actual vacation!  We took the kiddos on a “Grandma Tour” to visit each of their Great-Grandparents around the US, which meant we traveled to Spokane, WA… Phoenix, AZ… and Kansas City (well Olathe), KS.  It was lots of traveling but lots of great time with family.  Though remind me next time, not to plan a trip to Arizona and the midwest during the height of summer!  It was crazy hot, which we are not used to here in the Pacific Northwest. Smile

During the trip, and now, I’ve been heads down in planning for my big Stampin’ Up demonstrator regional event (the Northwest Stamp & Share) and focused on new Holiday Catalog product that is coming soon!  But while I’m finishing punching tags and prepping table decorations, I wanted to pop back on here and share a project using one of the new thinlits from the Annual Catalog that came out in June – the Detailed Floral Bundle

This is a fun, flip front card using the new dies.  I love how lacy and beautiful they are but I was struggling with them showing the words on the “inside” of the card when it was closed.  That’s one of those things that looks cute when other people do it, but when I try it never seems to look right?  Ever have that happen to you?  So I came up with the idea to cut a solid piece of cardstock that was just a little bit longer than my front flap and layer that inside.  Turned out cute, huh?

Then on the inside I used the new Floral Phrases stamp set to create my inside sentiment.  I just stamped the flower twice using Flirty Flamingo ink to frame my words.  Easy peasy!

Then just add some pieces of the coordinating washi tape in the upper corner and add a rhinestone to finish it off.  The ribbon was glued to the back of the card so it wouldn’t fall off and helps keep the card closed.

    Measurements for the card:

    • Card Base (Sahara Sand) – 4 1/4” x 11”, score at 5 1/2”
position the larger floral die so that it is evenly spaced from the score line and two sides
    • Night of Navy floral background – 4 1/4” x 4”  (you’ll cut off the top using the edgelit included in the Detailed Floral dies approx 1/4” longer than your front flap.)
    • Night of Navy inside piece – 3 3/4” x 5”
    • Whisper White inside piece – 3 5/8” x 4 7/8”

And if you want to see how to use this new details thinlit – and YES you will want to use the Precision Plate AND the Big Shot die brush, here is a video on it Smile

REMINDER – Thoughtful Branches Class by Mail is happening now!

ps-  this bundle is only available through August 31st or while supplies last!  So make sure you get your copy ordered sooner rather than later!

I shared some samples that I made for my Thoughtful Branches class by mail in my last blog post, but I wanted to give you another idea with some up-close details and tips!  Check it out:

Thoughtful Branches Hydrangea Card in Silver

See?  Those pretty shapes that are great for tree leaves, turn into a fabulous topper for a flower – hydrangea, right?  I’ll admit, I know about 3 flower names… maybe I should just call this pretty flufferpuff!  😉  Ha ha ha… or maybe one of you can correct me and let me know the right name.

Anyway, you can stamp the flowers in Perfect Plum ink onto Wisteria Wonder cardstock and use the coordinating die to cut them out.  IT IS EASIER THAN IT SEEMS!  I was totally intimidated by the idea of lining up the flowers, but thanks to the “shark fin” on both the die and the stamp, it isn’t too bad.
Thoughtful Branches Hydrangea Card in Silver side view

Then add the stem and leaves (from the same die set, of course) and keep the rest of your card simple and neutral to let the flower make the statement,

I chose to stick to the silver family with a little piece of silver foil on the left, Smoky Slate cardstock for the base and ink, and some of the new Smoky Slate stitched ribbon.

    Easy peasy sweetie!

I hope you liked this idea for the Thoughtful Branches bundle…. like I said, don’t wait until the last minute to get yours, just in case it sells out before the month is up!

Next up, get even more ideas for your framelits with another cool idea from Deb Naylor and the rest of the ICS crew.  There are 10 of us hopping this month, so lots of fun ideas to check out!

  • Swirly Bird Boat Swap Card for the Stampin’ Up Cruise

Whew boy!  I was going through my memory card on my camera to start planning out cards to post here on the blog when I realized that I recorded a video for how to make my swap card I took with me on the Mediterranean cruise, but I didn’t actually ever edit and POST the video!  Shows you how scattered I’ve been with summer this year.  See… I thought as my kiddos got older, when they were out of school it would be easier.  Instead, they have activities and way too much energy bouncing off the walls in our house!  Nope, I wasn’t at all prepared for them to be out of school, but all the chaos has taught me valuable lessons for how to be better prepared next time. Smile

But better late than never, right?!  So, here is the card I designed for the swap on the Mediterranean Cruise at the end of May:

I thought it was a fun, clean design… but then I thought it was even cooler when I noticed that folks who’s work I love like Mary Fish had actually posted a photo of my card from the display boards they made on the ship to her FB page. Smile  Good to know I wasn’t the only one who liked it!

Anyway, I put together a video so you could see how I made this card and some tips for putting it all together.  So, if you are a visual person, here you go!

(note – if you are reading this in email, you can see the video here)

It all started with the idea that the wavy die cut from the Swirly Scribbles thinlits set would make great waves… and if you have waves, then you have to have a boat!  And seriously, isn’t this the cutest little boat ever?  Plus with you having controls for each part, it makes it easy to really customize it to the color combination of your card.  (in this case I used Tip Top Taupe, Pool Party, Dapper Denim, So Saffron, and Peek-a-boo Peach.)

Then I had a sentiment I really liked from the Love and Affection stamp set and made a sort of rustic piece to go in the corner.  Didn’t want everything to be too clean and smooth… Smile  Nope, gotta roughen up that cardstock!  This is like my low effort way of making it feel nautical or like an old map and rope.  Come on… squint with me and you can kind of see what I was going for… right?

And the last piece that was impossible to show on the video and probably impossible to show here… but I added some shimmer to my “ocean” by adding some clear wink of stella glimmer paint in between the blue cardstock lines of the waves.  So the whole bottom part was shimmery which really makes it cool in person.  On the computer… well, um… just trust me, it is cute!

So, I hope you enjoyed this idea for using the Swirly Bird bundle.  Don’t worry I have more ideas to share soon as well… so if you don’t already have it, well, you just might want to get your own. Smile  And also, don’t forget about the Bonus Days promotion that is happening now!  Get the bundle and some adhesive and you get a $5 coupon to use in August.  Sweet!  Get bonus days details here!

A Card and a Tag with Touches of Texture

Alright, need some inspiration to get your morning going after that exciting Bonus days news?  I thought I’d share a couple projects I got to make while on the Stampin’ Up Incentive Trip in May.  We had the fun and novel experience doing make and take projects on a cruise ship.  These were some of my fun tablemates while I stamped.

    2016-05-27 09.40.05

We got to use the Touches of Texture stamp set and make a couple cards and a tag.  Here is the first card we made…

It is a great quick and easy card since it doesn’t take a lot of supplies but still is fun and interesting.  Now, I’ll admit, this stamp set is one that I totally passed over in the catalog.  You see, I don’t always know what to do with “collage-style” stamp sets.  When you look at the stamp images, they just look like a bunch of random images.  But these projects showed me that the great thing about these sets is that they are designed for you to mis-mash together and it pretty much always looks good!  Now that is an idea I can get behind!  Stamping like a crazy woman and not having my messes not only look intentional, but artsy?  Sign me up! Smile

We stamped a few images from the set for the flower and background splatter.  And if you look at the cardbase, there is another subtle background image too!  Add a strip of the Moroccan designer paper to the top, some Thick baker’s twine, and a sentiment and you are done!  Easy peasy!

And now for a project that looks super fancy, but is even easier!  A Touches of Texture gift tag!

All you have to do is cut a 2” strip (any length will do) from the Moroccan designer paper and punch the end with the Scalloped Tag Topper punch.  Stamp a few flowers from the Touches of Texture stamp set and set aside.

Grab another 2” strip of a different pattern from the Moroccan designer paper and punch BOTH ENDS using the Scalloped Tag Topper punch for a cool background shape.  Stamp you sentiment and punch out with the 2” circle punch and adhere some banners made from yet another Moroccan designer paper pattern and some gold sequins.  Glue them all together and you are done!  But wouldn’t it be a pretty addition to any gift or even the front of a card?  Give it a shot and let me know what you think!

  • Share the Love with a Clean and Simple Watercolor Wings Card

Summer is flying by and if your schedule is like mine… I don’t have quite as much time to create and craft as I did when the kiddos were in school.  I have lots of projects in my brain… now to get them out on paper!  Ever have that problem?

Well today, I wanted to share a quick card that you can pull together in a flash when you need to send a little love but don’t have a ton of time or a ton of supplies on hand for that matter!  All you need is a little bit of ink, some white paper, and some scraps of glitter paper and ribbon!

Project Tips for Creating This Card:

    • Take your basic Whisper White cardstock for your card base (cut to 8 1/2” x 5 1/2”, and scored at 4 1/4”).
    • Grab your Sahara Sand ink pad and stamp a few splatters in the middle of the page using Gorgeous Grunge.  You don’t need a lot, just a couple splatterings will do!
    • Add a strip of scrap Dazzling Diamond glimmer paper and a scrap of ribbon like this fabulous Mini Striped Tip Top Taupe ribbon.  See, this is a perfect use for your scraps!
    • Create a butterfly!  Grab the Watercolor Wings stamp and get creating on a scrap of Whisper White cardstock:

    • Pick a great color combination!  I used Sahara Sand, Tip Top Taupe, and Elegant Eggplant.  Aren’t they so pretty?  But try out your favorite colors and you will be surprised how fabulous your butterfly turns out!
    • Kick up the shine by coloring with the Wink of Stella clear glitter pen over all the Elegant Eggplant ink.  Seriously, it looks fabulous in person!  Don’t forget about this great pen… it makes every project just a little more awesome.

This stamp set is a hidden gem.  So if you have it at home – break it out!  You won’t be sorry. Smile  And if you don’t have it yet… it may want to go on your wishlist.  Just saying Winking smile

Fun Idea for the Sunburst Thinlit Die

So, are you ready for some inspiration?  Maybe even some things to add to your starter kit Winking smile.  This was a card I created for my Stamp Club as a way to mix and match some supplies in my craft room that I didn’t normally think to put together.  Check it out:

Fun things to try on this card:

    • Create a cool background with the Sunburst Die and Vellum!  I love the look of the sunburst die, but I wanted to do something a little bit different with is, so I used it to create a background pattern for my card.  The neat thing is that when you use Vellum for your sunburst, you can layer it over your cardbase and depending on the color of your base cardstock, you’ll get a cool muted color where the vellum overlays.
    • Only adhere the vellum where it is covered – just a tip for gluing down your Vellum, only put the glue where the sunburst will be covered up.  So, in this case, I just glued down underneath the square and not all the way to the ends of the sunburst rays.
    • Create a frame for the sentiment of your card – I love doing this with my cards.  I stamp my sentiment onto a piece of cardstock and then on a SECOND piece of cardstock (slightly larger than the sentiment piece) punch out a window using a framelit (like the Circles Framelits for a card like this) or a punch.  Then pop up that cardstock with a cutout over your sentiment using Stampin’ Dimensionals for a cool layered look.
    • Add extra texture by using an embossing folder for your frame piece – I took it up a notch by using the Woodgrain embossing folder on my circle frame piece.  Now, word of caution – you want to put in as few shims as necessary when embossing with this particular folder because when you go to cut out your circle, you end up with skinnier areas of cardstock around the circle which will be prone to tearing if your aren’t careful.  Good news though, if it tears a little, you can always put a dimensional behind the tear and it will hold it together and hide the rip.

I also created my colorful background for the sentiment by using the swoosh from the Work of Art stamp set and stamped in three different colors

    • Pool Party
    • Delightful Dijon
    • Wisteria Wonder

But mix and match the colors to coordinate with the colors of your card!

Try another color combination for the same card idea!

I thought I’d also post another version of this card that I created for the April OnStage Display boards – I changed up the colors to make the emphasis Mint Macaron, one of the colors I needed to highlight for the boards.

So you can see that changing up the colors on this design still looks great!  In this case, I used

    • Pool Party
    • Sahara Sand
    • Mint Macaron
    • Watermelon Wonder (for the heart)

So give it a try and let me know what color combinations you discover and love!

  • Making Kites on Cards with the Swirly Bird stamp set

If you have seen the Swirly Bird stamp set in the Stampin’ Up catalog, you may have thought to yourself that it didn’t look like much… or, like I did, what the heck am I going to do with these shapes?!

But the amazing thing you’ll see if you start looking at cards using this set, is that you end up seeing so many different options and opportunities!  Kind of like life, right?  You look at the jumble of people and situations and wonder how it all comes together and yet, usually you end up being pleasantly surprised by some of the cool and unexpected ways things come together!  So, today I thought I’d share one of the first cards I made with the Swirly Bird stamp set… did you see those weird triangle shapes in the stamp image above?  Check it out… they turn into kites when used together!!!

    Tips for making this card:

    • Two stamps means lots of opportunity to play with color – Mix and match your colors for the striped part of the kite and the solid part.  I was focusing on Delightful Dijon as this was a card for the OnStage displays using that color, but play around with your favorite colors to find new and fun color combinations!
    • Cut out some shapes to help your kites float on the breeze – While there is a coordinating thinlit set, it doesn’t cut out the kite image or the little bows.  But don’t be dissuaded from adding this pop of dimension!  Here are a few of my tips for cutting out stamp shapes so they look great:
Always leave some white space around the outside of your images!
When I first started cutting out stamped images, I tried to cut exactly on the outline of the image.  The problem with that is that I’m an imperfect cutter and so sometimes I would cut right on the line and sometimes I’d cut OFF the line, or leave a little bit of white.  Which in the end, didn’t look so great.  But when I would cut and always try to leave a little bit of white around the edges, you don’t notice when I’m slightly closer in one spot or a little farther away in others.  Plus, it keeps the clean edge of the stamped image in tact, so the image always looks great!
Move your paper NOT your scissors!
This is another trick that blew my mind when I first started cutting things out.  If
you are like me, you learned in kindergarten to open and close the scissors in the direction of where you want to cut.  And that works great if you are cutting strips of paper or other mostly straight lines.  It doesn’t work so well when you are cutting curves or in little detail areas.  So, now, I always start with my scissors open and slowly close them for my cutting, but with my other hand, I move my paper to change direction of the cut.  Moving the paper allows for smooth curves and can make it a lot easier to get in to those tight little spaces.
    • Cut up your dimensionals (and the edges of the foam dimensional sheets!) to pop up even the littlest pieces – I wanted my kites to be floating on the breeze, but then I had to figure out what to do with the tails.  Ended up being easy to just cut up some of the edges of dimensional sheets so I could pop up the thin lines behind a few of the bows on each string.  Seriously, it is easier than it sounds!
    • Try the other stamps in unexpected ways!  I thought the swirly images in the stamp set looked like birds nests or artsy flowers, but when working on this card, I suddenly saw clouds!  That is the beauty of it, you can make them whatever you want!  I used Soft Sky ink and then for fun, added a white sequin from the Metallic Sequins assortment to the middle of each with a glue dot.

I loved how this card came together and hope it inspires you to give this stamp set a second look and maybe you’ll see some fun and unexpected combinations for an amazing project!

And speaking of fun and amazing new products and projects, if you missed it over on my YouTube channel, I posted an “unboxing” video to walk through all the new ribbons, papers, accessories, kits, and many many new stamp sets!  In fact, I had so much I couldn’t keep it all in one box!  So, check it out and see if you find any unexpected favorites in there Smile

  • Peek-a-Boo, a Bear Hug card for You!

After all the tragedy in the news over the last weekend, I thought it was the perfect time to share a paper hug here on the blog.

I was inspired by a card by the hilarious Brian King and just loved the bear from the Bear Hugs stamp set popping out of the corner of the card!

    Tips for making this card:

    • Let your images jump out of the frame! Stamp the bear from the Bear Hugs stamp set and cut him out using the matching framelits.  Then glue him onto the front of the paper you want him to be popping out of, so that his legs are hanging off of the corner.  Trim off any parts of the bear that are hanging over the edge and he is jumping out with a hug for you!
    • Great looks with mats – Make it really looked like a framed window by creating a small mat out of the same color cardstock as the bear!  I have him glued onto a piece of Whisper White cardstock and cut his legs to match the edges of the white cardstock.  THEN, I mounted that onto a piece of Crumb Cake cardstock (the same that I used for the bear) that was cut to be 1/8” longer and taller than my white piece.  So, if the white cardstock is 2 1/4” x 3 1/2”, the crumb cake is 2 3/8” x 3 5/8”.
    • Mix and match sentiments for fun personalized sentiments!  I used the Peek-a-Boo from the Suite Sentiment sets and just colored the “peek-a-boo” from the baby sentiment with a marker.  Then I used the “see this hug” and it’s for you” from the Bear Hugs set, to finish out my custom sentiment!  Mix and match any works in your collection for fun phrases.

For everyone impacted by the horrible acts in Orlando this weekend, my heartfelt condolences to you and your loved ones!  There is also a card drive going on to shower the owner of Pulse nightclub with love and thoughts by sending her cards of support.  If you are interested in participating, I have details posted on my facebook page here.
