    Sweet & Simple No-Layer Card

Well, I totally forgot that today was Oscars day…. but given that my son has given me another head cold, today seems like the perfect day for laying on the couch and watching some TV.  So, if you are following along with the Oscars with me, don’t miss out on my Winners Predictions Contest over on my Northwest Stamper facebook page for a chance to win some prizes!

In the meantime, I thought I’d share a very quick and easy card that is perfect when you don’t have a lot of time or are just feeling a bit icky like I am today.  Look…. no layers at all!

All I needed was a couple stamp sets:  Happy Watercolor and Perfect Pennants, two ink pads, a marker, and my Simply Scored.

After stamping each of the flower images, I went back over them and added some yellow to the centers of the flowers for an extra sweet touch.

Also, I used my favorite trick for keeping no-layer cards interesting…. SCORING!

Sometimes I make scored lines in a box shape to frame my image, but in this case I kept it even simpler than that and scored two lines along the top of my card.  The first link is about 3/8” from the crease of the card, then I scored a second line 1/8” further down from the first line to add emphasis.

  • Origami Double Pocket Treat Pouch

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

If you are still looking for a quick love note or treat to share with someone you love today, here is a project we made at my Cool Cards and Sweet Treats class last weekend.  It is a fun and fast project to make any time of the year, plus it has the added bonus of being a great way to use up all that extra designer paper or 6×6 paper pads you may have lying around.

I call it an “origami treat pouch” because it is all folds and takes no adhesive unless you want a little bit to tack down the top point of your treat.  But unlike some origami that is a ton of steps and little tiny complicated folds, this has 5 score lines and a couple quick folds and you are done (check out my video below for how to do it).

Added bonus, it stands up on its own too!

I filled my pockets with wrapped Ghirardelli squares which are a perfect fit but you can also make cute little love notes to go inside as well.  You can cut 8 of these card bases out of 1 sheet of cardstock.

The card base is 2 3/4” x 4 1/4”, so once you score it, it is 2 1/8” x 2 3/4”.  I kept my card simple so that it could actually slide behind the chocolate treat I tucked in the pocket.  It uses the Oh Whale stamp set and just stamped the whale first and then the hearts and sentiment.  Add a little Dazzling Details to its eye and you have some cute sparkle to his eye.

Want to see how it is done?

I put together a quick video to show you how it scores and folds together.  So check it out and let me know what you think!

  • Making Envelopes to Hold 4×6 Photos

I always do this… pick a card to send to someone (in this case Christmas cards), grab an A2 envelope (the type made to fit a 4-1/4” x 5 1/2” card), and then as I’m going to stuff the envelope realize that I’m mailing out 4×6 cards… which doesn’t fit in the envelope!

Simply Scored Diagonal PlateThis year, however, I was motivated and determined and so I grabbed my Simply Scored and Diagonal Scoring Plate and decided I was going to figure out making my own envelopes this year.  Plus it was a good way to use up some really old 12×12 scrapbooking paper that I bought when I first got started and didn’t realize the difference in quality between the different companies.

Anyway, so I thought I would share with you some tips I learned while running this experiment!

    1.  First, grab some of that cheap scrapbook paper that is printed on one side and white on the other (or if you want to match your project, grab some nice 12×12 designer paper and I recommend at least one side be pale or very small patterned so you can have that as your outside to write your address on.

    cheap scrapbooking paper

    2. Next, cut your paper to size.  I found a great measurement list from Jackie Topa that I used to determine that I needed an 8” x 8” square.  I scored at 3-1/8”, rotated and scored at 4-1/2”, rotate and score at 3-1/8”, and then finally rotate and score at 4-1/2”.  She lists another measurement but I didn’t understand what it was for so I skipped that one!

Tip: When you are using the lightweight or “cheap” paper, I recommend using the fatter tip of your stylus for scoring.  I found that the skinnier tip made me nervous about tearing the paper since it had so much pressure in a tiny spot.

    stylus tip

    3. Your score lines will cross each other near the edges of your paper.  Trim out the triangles where they cross each other.

    snipped envelope

Now, as you look at the picture above, you may notice something funny going on.

That is right!  I was trying to use paper that had text on it and cut my 8×8” piece for the envelope, only to discover that once I scored the paper that the text was now going to be going at an angle!

So if you care about orientation of the pattern on your envelope, take into consideration your preferred final layout before scoring.  In fact, if you can cut your paper down so that the words/pattern is going at an angle on your 8”x8” square, than you will be in great shape when you start scoring.

    4.  Fold over the flaps and glue one big flap to two of the little-side flaps.  Once you stuff your envelope, you can adhere the last side.

Tip:  If you want to make your envelopes in advance and be all ready to go.  Put some sticky strip on the last flaps of your envelopes.  You can leave the tape covering on the exposed side so that it will be adhered to you envelope but doesn’t stick to anything else until you are ready to mail the envelope and you peel off that red backing!

    5.  Stuff your envelopes and you are ready to go!

I just thought I would show you what I ended up with for now.  The dark and busy patterns I used as insides for my envelopes while the paler and more solid patterns I used for the outside of my envelopes.

    finished handmade envelopes

So I hope that was helpful to you and that you will have lots of fun experimenting and creating your own custom envelopes!

  • Cheers! with Everything Eleanor

Psst! Wanna know a secret?  This card was totally made using scraps and left over pre-stamped and/or assembled elements that I had hanging around on my craft table.  But, the fun part was knowing that I was creating this as a card for one of my downline and friends, Pam, and trying to see what I had that I thought she would like. 🙂

The white cardstock actually had a sentiment stamped in the lower right corner but I decided it wasn’t right for Pam’s card, so I stamped and cut out some flowers from the Everything Eleanor stamp set to make a decorative way to cover up that unwanted stamping.  The center flower is Basic Black ink stamped on Wisteria Wonder cardstock and the smaller flowers are Basic Black ink stamped on Whisper White cardstock and then colored in with my So Saffron marker.

Add a pearl to the center of two of the flowers and then create a fun little sentiment flag by stamping on a piece of Wisteria Wonder cardstock.  Then cut a triangle out of one side of the banner and use your bone folder to curl the flag so it looks like it is waving in the wind (I used a dimensional under the center bump to help it hold it’s shape).

Clean and simple, and utterly relaxing for me to create as well!

  • Scrapbooking Sunday: Using the Simply Scored Board

For the first time in I don’t know how long, I actually created a scrapbook page without copying a sketch or a sample of someone else’s.  All because I got my hands on the new diagonal score plate for my Simply Scored and wanted to play with it!  I had a ton of scrapbooking ideas with the diagonal score lines but after realizing how little time I had this week, I opted for the simple approach… diagonal scoring as an accent piece of cardstock.

I loved how easy it was to make embossed diagonal score lines at the spacing I wanted… I didn’t have to be constrained by the size of an embossing folder or the predefined spacing of a folder or texture plate.  Sure, I’ll use my diagonal score plate to make envelopes too… but hey, I needed to get a scrapbook page done! 🙂

I grabbed my photo and a scrap piece of Crumb Cake cardstock and started scoring away.  Because the diagonal plate sits into my Simply Scored board, it was pretty painless to get through.  Then I just started layering other textured pieces to my layout to add some color and fun throughout the page.

I thought the piece of Well Worn designer paper went great with the colors in the photo and then I trimmed the designer paper with strips of the 1/8” Early Espresso taffeta ribbon.  I added some retired corduroy brads to the top of my scored strip, and for the last bit of fun, I stamped my title using the Letter It stamp set.  I did some heat embossing with clear embossing powder for some height and shine.

So, if you just ignore my distracted, and thus wonky, journalling; I think it is a quick page that lets the photo to the talking!  Switch out the designer paper and cardstock colors and you could have a totally different feel to your page!

  • First Day of the Stampin’ Up! Convention 2011

My word!  Its been a whirlwind of a week starting with me desperately trying to get swaps made and everything packed and ready to go for convention this year.  But I made it and flew into Salt Lake City on Tuesday in anticipation of a great week…and I haven’t been disappointed!

Today was the first day of convention and boy was it a doozy!  Lots of sneak peeks of upcoming products, freebies, amazing ideas, and fab projects.  I’ve been posting pictures on my facebook page when I could so if you want to see a few more pictures, check it out.  But I couldn’t take pictures of a lot of the details I learned so I wanted to share a few pictures and more details!  Enjoy!

Ok, can I have a personal toot for a minute? :)  Each year they invite people who met certain milestones or achievements to walk across the stage.  I am still working towards that, but this year they added 2 more marches – first time attendees and anyone who recruited in the last year.  Well, Bethani, my downline, got to walk for first time attendee and I got to walk for recruiting!  Yay!

    P7130142

Next we had a HUGE sneak peek at the upcoming Holiday Mini that launches in September.  No joke, I am in so much trouble with how much I want out of it.  There are new ribbons (can you say velvet and quilted satin?), new punches including a stocking punch that has a matching stamp set!!, fun holiday dies and embellishments (like mini jingle bells that I have no idea what I’m going to do with yet but I have to get), more adorable fabric (I’m just saying check out my next picture), of course new papers and stamps, and a ton more.  Then they showed us this bag that we could buy in Memento Mall that looks like this:

    IMG_2708

Know what it’s for?  AAAAHHHHH!  I’m so excited!!!  It’s made to fit the new Simply Scored tool!  That’s right, a super awesome scoring tool.  It takes the best features of what’s out there and adds some, like besides giving you lines every 1/8”, you get a metal tipped ergo stylus, multiple plastic arrows to mark which score lines you are using for a given project, a storage compartment, multiple ruled edges, etc.  I’m so stoked!

Ok, moving on.  At lunch, I had another amazing experience where when we entered the Gathering Place to get our lunches, we got picked for a You Crew experience.  You Crew is their name for randomly selecting people to have one of a variety of one of a kind experiences and in our case, we got a special table with glasses, plates, lemonade, a staffer who made sure we were well taken care of.  Pretty fun!

IMG_2695  At the end of lunch, we saw that they had put out a special dessert.  Cookies…but not just any cookies, check out the designs:

    IMAG1469

Yeah, yeah you say, they have designs.  But these are special designs.  They are Stampin’ Up! cookie stamp designs!  Yes, as in a stamp that can make different impressed images on cookie dough.  How fun is that.  Oh, and the shortbread recipe that comes with it, if it is the same one they used for these cookies, is pretty darn yummy.  🙂

Finally we finished our day with make & takes, which I still need to finish so I can share with you, and one more session where we saw some great ideas for quick, easy, and inexpensive projects.  Like did you know you can get a package of quick accent stickers, 2 packages of notecards, and make 40 cards in no time flat?  And they are simple and cute too.

I know I don’t have many project sample pictures today, but don’t worry.  I’ll have more of the projects and products I can photograph and share posting over the next few days.  And don’t forget to stop by my facebook page to see more photos and updates when I can.
