Masculine Birthday Card Idea with Balloon Adventures

Masculine Birthday Card with Balloon Adventures by Jennifer Blomquist NWstamper.com

With so many great flowers and lace stamps and dies, sometimes I have a hard time finding a  Masculine birthday card in my stash.  So, when I was designing a card for my recent Stamping Bingo event, I decided to fix that problem!  I love this Balloon Adventures stamp set and especially that it fits the Balloon Bouquet punch.  But this card is all about the details, which lets you keep it interesting without bringing it over to the girly side. Smile  Let me share with you some of the fun touches we added:
LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS CARD

Bright Birthday Card with a Swirly Scribbles Thinlits Bouquet

When I start working on a project, sometimes I have a plan in mind, but often I turn to pinterest or google image search to give me a starting point for my project.  Most of the time, I end up mixing and matching my favorite ideas from multiple cards into one card.  But sometimes I come across a card that I love so much that I just have to make it exactly as I see it.  Today is one of those cards!  Check out how fun and cheery it is:

I saw this card by Shannon Kay on Pinterest and loved the colors and layout, I just needed to change up the sentiment since I thought this would be the perfect birthday card!

Tips and Tricks for this card:

  • Pick the perfect color palatte!  When trying to figure out what colors to use on cards, I usually start by looking at color combos from designer paper or start from a color family.  In this case, you can start with the Subtles color family and grab Calypso Coral, Pear Pizzazz, and So Saffron. But then the perfect third color comes from the 2016-2018 In Colors – Peekaboo Peach!  Aren’t they great together?

    TAMS Color Builder (2)
  • Swirly Flowers from the Swirly Scribbles Thinlits – these swirls are great for decorative accents, birds nests, and in this case… flowers!  When you look at your dies as they come in the packaging, you will see the little swirl die is sitting inside the larger swirl.  So, that big Saffron flower is actually two dies, the larger swirl and the smaller swirl stacked together.

  • Tie in a pop of color in your backgrounds with monochromatic designer paper – This is one of those times where the color family Designer Paper Stacks are great.  They are sets of monochromatic paper that is perfect for adding an interesting background paper without being so busy as to take away from your main image.
  • Pick the perfect sentiment! I love sentiment sets that give you a variety of fonts and phrases since it gives you lots of options on your cards.  In this case, I’m using the Better Together stamp set and it is one that I totally overlooked in the catalog for the longest time, but turns out it really adds some fun to your cards.  I mean, who wouldn’t smile getting this card and the happy “Happy Birthday!”?

Who do you know who could use a smile like this on their birthday?

And if you want to make fun cards like this with me (we did this one in stamp club a little while back), consider joining me for one of my monthly card making classes here in Redmond, WA!  We have lots of fun and there are multiple options a month to come get your crafty on.  Check us out over on my meetup here – the Bellevue-Redmond Card Makers

Enjoy the Little Things Card with Botanical Gardens

So, by now you’ve heard (and probably seen) the retiring list from Stampin’ Up of which things are going to be discontinued at the end of May.  If you can believe it, some of the items have already started selling out!  Just so you know – you SU fans like me – here is what has sold out as of this morning:

RETIRED ITEMS SOLD OUT ALREADY:
Washi Label punch
Trimmer replacement mat
Cottage Greetings Kit
Stack & Store Caddy
In Color 12×12 cardstock (2014-16)
Smoky Slate marker

But there are still lots of great items available and some are even discounted up to 50% off!  Score!  So, today I thought I’d share a card I made recently using a few of the items that will be saying goodbye at the end of next month.  It is a fun card using the Botanical Garden suite products and the fabulous Enjoy the Little Things stamp set.

This was my variation on a card I saw online by Darlene Boardman.  I loved the idea of die cutting out the fern-y leaves from the Botanical Builders thinlits and then using that negative space for the fern image.  So, I cut a strip of Mossy Meadow cardstock just a little bit wider than the die and 5 1/2” tall and cut out the 4 ferns.  (Save them for another project now that you’ve gone through the work to cut them out!)  And then I started by adhering a piece of Whisper White cardstock beneath the cut outs so you could see them clearly!

Pick your favorite pattern papers… I liked this yellow linen pattern and the colorful florals from the Botanical Gardens designer paper… and layer them together – all are the full 5 1/2” tall.  Depending on which papers you use, you get a totally different look!

Then we stamped the sentiment from the Enjoy the Little Things stamp set in Mossy Meadow and punched out with the 2” circle punch and gave it a Mossy Meadow mat using the 2 1/2” circle punch (SOB!  I can’t believe they are retiring my 2 1/2” circle punch!!)

Add a little bit of linen thread looping out behind the sentiment and pop-up on dimensionals and you are good to go!  Like I said, fun card… but sadly full of goodies that will be going away.  Here is the run down of what I used that is now found on the retiring list.

Retiring Products:

How about a few Display Board ideas using Botanical Builder dies?

Well, on the plus side, the Botanical Builder thinlits will be carrying over into the new catalog.  So, yay for that!  Up on the display boards were a few projects using them.  Here are a couple I found in my pictures that I could grab quickly.

This first is an AMAZING scrapbook layout that Stacey Lane from my Fun n’ Crafty stampers created.  She made a TON of flowers and used some of the new In Colors – Flirty Flamingo and Peekaboo Peach to create them.  The end result is just stunning!

Or you can keep it sweet and simple!  Here is another fun card that uses the Work of Art stamp set and the “stamping off” technique to create a cool paint chip strip look.  You stamp the darkest color and then just keep stamping without re-inking your stamp to get a slightly lighter image each time.  Then they added one of the simple flowers from the Botanical Builders dies in white as a cute accent next to each sentiment (psst… new stamp sneak peek!)

So, I hope this gave you some fun ideas with the Botanical Builders die and a few of the retiring products headed for hills soon!  You can check out all of the retiring items and see which are on sale and which you might want to grab while supplies last!  And if your wishlist is $100 or more, consider upgrading your purchase to the Demonstator Starter Kit!  You’ll get to pick out $125 in product, while only paying $100.  Plus your have access right away to check out the upcoming annual catalog, purchase from it in May, and even better – you’ll become a part of my Fun n’ Crafty Stampers group.  A fun community of stampers who love to stamp, learn, create, and share!

Using the Softer Side of the Perfectly Artistic Designer Paper

So, first… just to remind you… today is the LAST DAY that the Perfectly Artistic designer paper will be available along with the Sky’s the Limit stamp set and the Hello stamp set.  So, if you were planning on getting any of those items, make sure you do it today, just to be sure!  Remember it is FREE with any $50 purchase. Smile

Ok, so, let’s get to the card, shall we?  Here is one more share featuring the Perfectly Artistic Paper:

Sunburst Sayings with Embossed Perfectly Artistic paper Thank You

The marble side is pretty and elegant, but I LOVE the watercolor wash side of the sheets because they are just subtle and beautiful colors for your projects.  I kept them simple and let the colors do the talking.

Use Embossing Folders for extra Wow!

Take your strips of patterned paper (cut to 1 1/8” wide) and glue them onto a piece of scrap paper that is the same total size (in this case 3.25” x 4.5”).  Once they are all on the scrap paper, you can run them through your embossing folder to get a cool continuously embossed paper.

Sunburst Sayings with Embossed Perfectly Artistic paper close up

Once you have the paper embossed, then it is just adding your own flair.  From the awesome Pool Party glitter ribbon to stamping the dotted stamp from the Sunburst Sayings stamp set onto a strip of Whisper White cardstock as one more touch.  I used the new Archival Basic Grey ink… pretty and rich, just like the archival Basic Black.

Have fun with Ombre for your Sunburst Sayings sentiment

I saw a similar idea on a card swap this winter to use different shades of the same general color.  So, for this card, I decided to give it a try with yellows:

  • For the star (from the Be the Star stamp set) – So Saffron ink
  • For the “You’re the best” – Hello Honey
  • For the “Thanks” – Delightful Dijon

Sunburst Sayings with clear wink of stella

And once you have it stamped, punch it out with a 2 1/2” circle punch and then make the finishing touch by adding Clear Wink of Stella…. remember, we can’t live without that Wink of Stella!

Beautiful Backgrounds with Perfectly Artistic Paper & Wink of Stella

I’m back and continuing on sharing some of my favorite projects using the retiring Perfectly Artistic designer paper that you can get free during Sale-a-Bration.  I’ve said many times, you don’t get a good feel for this paper pack in the catalog, but ooh boy is it pretty in person!

Sunburst sayings with perfectly artistic butterfly card and wink of stella

Today, I wanted to share a card I made for my Occasions Catalog kick off party.  It was a make & take and we were playing with lots of new things.  So many fun new things that make your projects really come together easily and have that wow factor, including:

  • Perfectly Artistic designer paper (retiring 2/15)
  • Gold Wink of Stella
  • Big Shot Die Brush

Now, you can see where the Perfectly Artistic paper stands out on the card.  It is the pretty grounding layer for the base of the card.

But then, I wanted to step it up a notch, so I cut out a Butterfly using the Butterflies die and swiped some Gold Wink of Stella behind it.  The Gold brush has great color and of course the gorgeous shimmer!

Gold wink of stella close up with butterfly die

Keep your colors simple to let your accents shine!

I loved the delicate butterfly, the shimmery Wink of Stella, and the elegant Perfectly Artistic paper…I wanted to let them really stand out, so I kept the colors of the card neutral and simple.  Everything was a shade of Tip Top Taupe, Delightful Dijon/Gold, White, and Black.

So, when I went to add the last touches with the Sunburst Sayings stamp set, I kept in those colors.  Archival Black for the rich ink for the sentiment, and then Delightful Dijon for the fun heart or “V” accents that I stamped diagonally across the card base.

sunburst sayings butterfly card close up

Just a tip…. if you want the Wink of Stella to get the most shine, scribble back and forth a few times to lay down enough color.  Then when you go to glue down the butterfly, only glue the center so the wings can stand up and add extra dimension.

And remember how I mentioned the Big Shot die brush?  It makes getting all those pieces out a snap!  I put together a video on how the die brush works with some tips earlier this week.  So, check it out and I’ll show you how fabulous it is with this butterfly die!

Beautiful Bloomin’ Heart Butterfly Card (VIDEO TUTORIAL)

Oh my goodness you guys! I’ve been so excited to share this Bloomin’ Heart Butterfly card with you… and I’ve even got a VIDEO TUTORIAL for it too!  I almost forgot how much I love doing videos.  Now to take some time this afternoon to try to record some more!

But in the meantime, can we talk about how pretty this butterfly is…and the secret is to make it using the new Bloomin’ Heart thinlit die!

Bloomin' Heart Thinlit Butterfly Card

I first saw the idea to cut out a butterfly from the Bloomin’ Heart die by fellow demo Kirsteen Gill and I knew I just had to try it for myself.  I tried repeating what I saw her do – tone on tone heart diecut over the butterfly, but decided I wanted to make some changes to brighten it up a bit.  And I just LOVE how it turned out.

From Heart to Butterfly in one Quick Step

The secret to this card is that you can fit the outline butterfly from the Bold Butterflies thinlits over the Bloomin’ Heart die cut.  So, you can just exactly cut out this pretty lacy butterfly.  So, die cut heart… to butterfly… done!

I wanted to really show off that floral pattern though, so I layered it over a contrasting color (Crumb Cake) butterfly and then stepped it up even more by adding some flowers cut out of the Blushing Bride glimmer paper.  Don’t they look so pretty behind the Very Vanilla pattern?

Bloomin' Heart butterfly with Blushing Bride glimmer paper

Once I had my butterfly, I put together the rest of the card using some of the rest of the Love Blossoms Suite

  • Add an extra pop of color by adding some patterned paper from the Love Blossoms designer paper
  • Sponge the edges of the cardstock and designer paper using Crumb Cake ink to make it more vintage
  • Stamp a sweet sentiment from the Bloomin’ Love stamp set!  I figured “love, its in the air” went well with the butterfly themeLove Blossoms stamp with Wink of Stella
  • Keep the shimmer going, add some Clear Wink of Stella to the heart for the perfect final touch.  Can you really go wrong with Wink of Stella?  No… I didn’t think so. Winking smile

See how to make this Step-by-Step plus LOTS of tips & tricks too

Bright & Cheery Birthday Card with the New Party Wishes Stamps & Confetti Embossing Folder

Let’s think spring and bright and cheery as we head into January.  I know a lot of people are thinking about resolutions and thinking about making sure you are on top of birthday cards for the year – I know I am!  I want to do a lot better sending out birthday cards to my friends and family.  So, let’s kick things off with a fun birthday card using the new Party Wishes stamp set and the Confetti Embossing Folder!

Ok, really… I just love this sentiment!  Coming from a tech background and working in an office, I have had my share of meetings.  Plus I am a firm believer that every birthday needs cake… even if it is just a little cupcake.  This year, my kids both had mid-week birthdays, so we had their parties with friends and family on the weekend.  But I HAD to make sure they had some cake on their actual birthday even though their main-event cake was at the weekend party. Smile

Jennifer’s Project Tips:

  • The Confetti embossing folder already has that oval smoothed out in the middle, making it a perfect frame for your birthday cards!  Place the indented side UP and lightly sponge over it with a sponge dauber and your favorite colors and it will keep the embossed areas mostly white and the color all around them, so they really pop!
Just be sure not to press too hard!  And mix and match your colors too.  I used:  Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight, Bermuda Bay, and Perfect Plum.
  • Add a little extra sparkle by adding a strip of Dazzling Diamonds glimmer paper to the top and the bottom of the card.  It is really hard to see in the picture, but it really ups the pizzazz in real life.
  • See those little birthday candles?  I totally did NOT cut those out by hand!  If you get the Party Wishes bundle, you will also get the Party Punch Pack which includes little punches to punch out the candles along with a little balloon and cupcake.  Easy peasy!
  • I did tie some Gold 1/8” ribbon around my cake.  It just needed a little punch up as well.  Look for any of your little ribbons and use them in unexpected ways like around stamped images.

Oh, and don’t forget that Archival Basic Black ink!  It makes for AMAZINGLY RICH and dark stamped sentiments and outlines.  Though I do only recommend it with your red rubber stamps (unless you don’t mind staining the heck out of your photopolymer stamps).  It really is my favorite black ink!

It’s Sale-a-Bration time!

Don’t forget, if you spend $50 or more…. like if you got the Party Wishes bundle, the embossing folder, some ribbon, and sponge daubers for example,  You’ll get to pick something for free out of the Sale-a-Bration catalog!
