    Beautiful Backgrounds with Perfectly Artistic Paper & Wink of Stella

    I’m back and continuing on sharing some of my favorite projects using the retiring Perfectly Artistic designer paper that you can get free during Sale-a-Bration.  I’ve said many times, you don’t get a good feel for this paper pack in the catalog, but ooh boy is it pretty in person!

    Today, I wanted to share a card I made for my Occasions Catalog kick off party.  It was a make & take and we were playing with lots of new things.  So many fun new things that make your projects really come together easily and have that wow factor, including:

    • Perfectly Artistic designer paper (retiring 2/15)
    • Gold Wink of Stella
    • Big Shot Die Brush

    Now, you can see where the Perfectly Artistic paper stands out on the card.  It is the pretty grounding layer for the base of the card.

    But then, I wanted to step it up a notch, so I cut out a Butterfly using the Butterflies die and swiped some Gold Wink of Stella behind it.  The Gold brush has great color and of course the gorgeous shimmer!

    Keep your colors simple to let your accents shine!

    I loved the delicate butterfly, the shimmery Wink of Stella, and the elegant Perfectly Artistic paper…I wanted to let them really stand out, so I kept the colors of the card neutral and simple.  Everything was a shade of Tip Top Taupe, Delightful Dijon/Gold, White, and Black.

    So, when I went to add the last touches with the Sunburst Sayings stamp set, I kept in those colors.  Archival Black for the rich ink for the sentiment, and then Delightful Dijon for the fun heart or “V” accents that I stamped diagonally across the card base.

    Just a tip…. if you want the Wink of Stella to get the most shine, scribble back and forth a few times to lay down enough color.  Then when you go to glue down the butterfly, only glue the center so the wings can stand up and add extra dimension.

    And remember how I mentioned the Big Shot die brush?  It makes getting all those pieces out a snap!  I put together a video on how the die brush works with some tips earlier this week.  So, check it out and I’ll show you how fabulous it is with this butterfly die!

    I’m back!  *shaking the rust off*  I’ve been so heads down the last week or two trying to get caught up/wrapped up on 2015 business stuff that I may have fallen a little behind on blogging.  But I’m happy to report … no seriously, doing a total happy dance… that I am all caught up and starting to focus on all the new things I’m planning for 2016!

    For example, I’m starting a NEW Technique Series!  This is an updated version of my monthly technique classes but I’m expanding it!  Each month, we’ll be discussing a specific technique or tool and a number of variations that you can do (just like before) but now we’ll be creating an album page with printed instructions and samples for each technique in addition to our projects!  So, by the end of the year, you’ll have a complete book full of dozens of technique ideas!  Here is the front of page we are making today:

    And before I go, I wanted to share with you a card I made recently for a swap for the new catalog.  I LOVE this Sky’s the Limit stamp set from the Sale-a-bration catalog.  It is a really fun set for love and for masculine cards!  Plus, I love that you can get it free with a $50 order!

    I grabbed some of my new It’s My Party designer paper and found a neutral pattern for my background piece.  I don’t know, I guess I thought the yellow made me thing of sun or something. Smile  And then stamped some clouds from the Sky’s the Limit stamp set.  Then sponge the edge with Soft Suede ink and mat it with some Soft Sky cardstock.

    The thing that took a bit of work, was the hand cutting of the airplane.  You don’t have to hand cut this plane for it to look great on cards… but I just loved how it looked like it was coming out of the card when you did and popped it up on the patterned paper.

    Add a banner for your sentiment… helpfully punched perfectly with the Triple Banner punch and then sponge the edge with Whisper White ink.  Yes, I know, it is totally hard to see the white in this picture, but I tried! Smile 

    And I couldn’t let it go without a little bit of bling.  This is a great way to use up those connected strands of pearls or rhinestones that come in the packs.  They are always the last for me to use, but I love when I come up with things like this that are just perfect for snipping and using them up.

    Ok, so I have A LOT to catch up on… so, big breath in, and get ready to dive in to some project ideas for you!

    First up, this fun birthday card idea using the Sale-a-Bration stamp set – Big Day!

    Tips for making this card:

    • This was my first time using the new Chalk inks… and with it my first time playing with the new Chalkboard paper!  This paper has the COOLEST texture and is so fun to play with.  You want to stamp on the SMOOTH side with the chalk inks so that the ink will sit on the surface and give you that pretty chalkboard look.  (this is the Coral Rose color)
    • Add your own extra touches with the Chalk Pen!  The white dots under the cake and the white lines along the side of the chalkboard paper are made with the Chalk Pen.  As you can see, it is really vibrant on the Chalkboard paper, but more “chalky” when drawing on regular cardstock.
    • Make a fun embellishment piece by using the new Ornate Tag Topper punch… only don’t just stick to one side, do both!  I had a 2” strip of Whisper White cardstock that I punched both ends.  Then run some ribbon through the holes (and tie together on the inside of the card) to hold it in place.
    • Jazz up your Ornate tag by grabbing a Stampin’ Write marker and drawing a border about 1/16” in from the edge of the tag.  Really helps you see the design, huh?
    • And don’t hesitate to stamp your image and then stamp & color a second version to pop-up on top!  It keeps it interesting to look at when viewed at different angles, but you only have to color one. Smile

  • Customer Thank You Cards with my New Favorite Color Combo!

    This weekend I needed to make some more thank you cards for Stampin’ Up orders this month.  I really appreciate all my customers and stamping friends who support me and my business, and so I like to send them a card they can use themselves (so if you get a card from me and wonder why I wrote my note to you on a post-it note, now you know!)

    I was looking around for inspiration and came across this card by Glenda Calkins and I just LOVED the color combination and knew I had to make my own!  So, here is what I am sending out to anyone who orders from me this month! 

    Tips for making this card:

    • First up, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this color combination.  If you haven’t tried it already, you should.  Especially since we only have a couple months left with the fabulous Coastal Cabana!

    • Use the Crazy About You bundle (save 15% off too when you get the stamp set and thinlit at the same time!) to use this same card design for almost any sentiment you want!  Birthday, thank you, Mother’s Day, Easter, you name it!  The fun combo of the die cut word with the stamped sentiment keeps it interesting.
    • When cutting out your word with the thinlit die, it will come out so much more easily if you put a piece of wax paper between the thinlit die and your cardstock!  Best trick ever!!
    • The Oval Framelits give you a perfect die cut for your focal point and a nice mat around it by just going up one size in framelit.
    • Adhere your patterned paper from the Sale-a-Bration Best Year Ever designer paper onto your Sahara Sand cardstock, and then wrap a piece of Coastal Cabana ribbon from the Sale-a-bration Best Year Ever accessory pack making sure to only glue the ends of the ribbon.  When you leave the middle of the ribbon unglued, it lays more nicely and lets you take a second piece of ribbon and slide it under your first ribbon and tie a knot.  So, you get a perfect faux bow everytime.

    And just in case you want to make your own, here are the dimensions:

    Card base – 4 1/4” x 11” folded in half
    Sahara Sand cardstock – 4” x 5 1/4”
    Best Year Ever striped designer paper – 4” x 2 5/8”

    These are so pretty and you can either color the vellum like the background in that top card using your blendabilities, or you can just use the vellum as a layer like in this treat bag above.  They used it for a pocket and for the base bag.  Adorable!  (and that butterfly and flower are stamped using the last new item and that ribbon is from the Sale-a-Bration Best Year Ever accessory pack!  So combine what you already have with the new cuteness!

    NOTE – this vellum is 2 sheets each of the 12 patterns and is a 6×6 paper stack.  Honestly though, I think that makes it much more easy to manage on my projects. Smile

  • Bright Birthday Card with Celebrate Today and Sale-a-Bration Accessories

    Did you catch my Occasions Catalog walkthough video?  If you did, you saw me showing this card when I talked about both Sale-a-bration products as well as the Celebrate You stamp set and framelit bundle.  It was my first time playing with this set and I just had too much fun!

    Tips for making this card:

    • If you like the Celebrate Today stamp set, then you definitely should go for the bundle!  You get framelits to cut out almost all of the shapes including those cute balloons (and pennants, which I didn’t in this card, but could have).  Plus you save money in the process.
    • When picking colors for your card, pick your papers or your accessories to get inspiration from. In this case, I reached for my Best Year Ever (FREE) Sale-a-Bration accessory pack and used the ribbons and buttons.  So, the rest of the card was centered around those colors – Crushed Curry, Calypso Coral, and Coastal Cabana
    • Don’t be afraid to go “off the page”!  I let my elements (like the sentiment and the balloon) have their edges peek over the edges of my white layer.  This gives the card more interest and keeps it from being too stiff.

  • Another Sneak Peek with Simply Wonderful and Tip for Using Your Patterned Paper Scraps

    If you are like me, you have a pile of paper scraps on your desk… some punch outs, some larger cut pieces, some stamped images.  And I have a heck of a time convincing myself to recycle them because I just know they will be useable in another project.  Unfortunately, I don’t actually use them most of the time and they just pile up.  Like so –

    So, I decided to spend some time this week using them up!  I’ve been sharing some of my progress on my Facebook page – www.facebook.com/nwstamper – but I just loved how this card turned out and so I had to share it here.

    This is also a sneak peek of the Sale-a-Bration set Simply Wonderful.  I can already tell I’m going to have LOTS of fun with this one.

    But the thing I really wanted to share was the technique for using up your scraps of paper to create this diagonal pattern for the card.

    Tips for making this card:

    • This is perfect use for 6×6 paper packs or pieces from my Paper Samplers!  New Occasions Catalog Paper Sampler is coming soon!  Watch HERE for more details.
    • Cut your strips of paper to 3/4” x 3” and adhere at an angle across a scrap piece of cardstock.  (I did two at a time and had two 1-1/4” x 4” pieces next to each other when glueing)
    • Trim the excess paper off the edges to get your final piece of patterned paper
    • The All is Calm specialty designer paper makes a pretty backdrop but it is only available until January 5th!
    • Add some baker’s twine and some Sequins (like the In Color Sequins) to add some coordinating bling to your card.

  • Non-Christmas Partridge and Pears Card with NEW Sale-a-Bration stamp–Simply Wonderful

    When I first saw this Partridge and Pears stamp set, I knew I wanted to use my Blendabilities to color it – but it took until now to actually color the entire tree!  Turns out it is great for cards anytime of the year, don’t you think?

    I mixed and matched retiring stamps (Partridge and Pears) with upcoming stamps (Simply Wonderful from Sale-a-Bration).  Not at all Christmas-y!  Smile

    Tips for making this card:

    • Stamp the tree image from Partridge and Pears using Memento ink onto White cardstock.  Then color with blendabilities to match the colors and feel you want for your card.  In this case, I used:  Old Olive, Daffodil Delight, Calypso Coral, Crumb Cake, and the Skin Tones.
    • Stamp the sentiment from the Simply Wonderful stamp set to make this an anytime card (starting January 6, it will be FREE with a $50 order or if you join my Stampin’ Up team)!
    • Add the “hi” die cut from the Label Flipcard Thinlit for a fun touch to your sentiment, with a pearl for the dot of the “I”.
    • Use Stampin’ Dimensionals under the center of the sentiment to help make a rippling banner look.

  • 2015 Occasions Catalog and Sale-a-Bration Sneak Peek Products Haul Video

    So, instead of playing with my new preorder as planned, I spent the time reorganizing my craft room – again- and made a trip to the amazing IKEA which is what my craft room is built upon. Smile  There I got a second table so I could have space permenantly set up for taking photos of projects and doing VIDEOS!!  YAY!!

    I decided to try it out yesterday and did a “see the haul” video where I shared all the goodies I got in my preorder and talked a little about each of them and even put together a treat bag!  So, if you are curious to see what the products that are coming out soon look like, check out this video:
