  • Friday Favorite–Amazing Birthday the Display Board Swap Card

Friday Favorite–Amazing Birthday the Display Board Swap Card

Today over on the Stylin’ Stampin’ Inkspiration blog, the girls are sharing some of their favorites items.  I thought I would do a spin on that and share one of my favorite Convention Display Board cards and the stamp set that I loved working with – Amazing Birthday.  Like I’ve said before, I really like that this set is not just about Birthday but can be used for thanks, guys, or anything in between.  But in this case, I stuck to birthday and my favorite shape of the season – STARS!! No joke, I am so digging the stars thing right now and when I finished this card, it was the first one from the set of display board projects that I really got excited about.  So much so that I used it for our group swap where we picked on of our cards from the board to create and trade.

(SPOILER ALERT! If you love stars, get excited because in the upcoming Holiday Catalog, there is a stars embossing folder & a stars confetti border punch!!! Um, yes please!!)

    Tips for creating this card:

    • Pick a neutral color and then two contrasting colors (I picked Crumb Cake, Pacific Point, and Hello Honey) and then repeat them all over your card.  Don’t be afraid to use a non-traditional color for your shape like blue for stars.
    • Offset your die cut images for a more interesting look.  You’ll notice that I had the Hello Honey banner aligned with the edge of the Crumb Cake whereas the Pacific Point is aligned to the edge of the card base.
    • Sponge the edge of bigger cardstock elements (like the the bigger star) to help them have more dimension even if you don’t pop them up on a dimensional.  Often just using the same color as the cardstock is enough.
    • When die cutting a shape with the matching framelit, like I did here with the banners, USE the Magnetic Platform!  Yes, you can use a post-it note… or the hope really hard methods Winking smile  but you will have a better time getting an even edge around your images when you use the magnetic platform because it is strong enough to keep the framelit where you set it!

    Card Supplies Used

Oh, I forgot to mention, the sentiment is actually hand cut out… and yes, that Happy doesn’t have the dark line to the left of the “H”… that is intentional. Smile When I was doing this for a swap, I cut long strips for Whisper White cardstock (around 1.25” wide) and stamped my sentiment on the strip and then trimmed down with my snips to the narrower width. But this is a fun color combination, so grab some cardstock and give it a try with your projects.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

  • Convention 2014 Swap Card with Kinda Eclectic

Convention 2014 Swap Card with Kinda Eclectic

I told you yesterday how much fun I’ve been having with the Kinda Eclectic stamp set.  Well, the best part was that I hit upon an idea I loved for my swap cards to take with me to convention this year that were actually easy to mass produce!  It was a miracle!!

For the most part, everything is stamped straight on top of each other, with the exception of the little butterfly which conveniently fits in the Bitty Butterfly punch.  So, up that guy went onto a dimensional!  Gotta have dimension, right?

Now while I was working on my 80+ swap cards, I discovered that there was a trick to stamping that big sun image.  I was going along great and then I started getting that “halo” problem.  You know, when you get a line from the edge of the rubber onto your image – exactly NOT where you want it!  But I figured out how to fix that and did a quick little video on it.  (I think I’m going to start doing more of these “Quick Tip” videos… so fun!)

note – if you are reading this blog post in email, you won’t see the video above, so be sure to click HERE to view the post and video.

    Tips for making this card

    • Don’t be afraid to layer stamped image on top of each other.  If you start with the lightest color and go to dark, most of the time the dark ink will hide where it is overlapping (or at least enough that you don’t notice).
    • Add a punched or cut out item to your stack of stamped images to give it that extra wow touch.
    • When making lots of the same design, use a Designer Paper Stack like the Moonlight designer paper I used here, because you can mix and match your designs and know they will still all contain the same set of colors.  So while each card may have a slightly different pattern on top, the overall look of the card will be the same.
    • Use Baker’s Twine as an easy and inexpensive way to break up a busy pattern of paper.  You get 25 yards for only $2.95 and so you can wrap to your hearts content and have lots left over for other projects.
    • If you like the 2014-2016 In Colors (which is what I used for this card) get the In Color ink & bundle pack!  It is basically getting all the ink pads and then getting your cardstock for free!

  • Clean & Simple and BRIGHT Kinda Eclectic Card for the Stampin’ Up Display Boards

Clean & Simple and BRIGHT Kinda Eclectic Card for the Stampin’ Up Display Boards

Today is one of those quick and simple days… you know, when you need a card or want to get some crafting in but either don’t have the time or the mojo to come up with something elaborate or clever.  I thought I’d share one of the cards I created for the 2014 Stampin’ Up Convention display boards that fits the bill nicely!

All you need is a circle punch and some extra paper and you pretty much have a card!  The best part is this design works with pretty much any paper you have, though I really liked the bright colors and bold patterns from the Sweet Taffy designer paper to contrast with the white cardstock base.

    Tips for making this card

    • Cut a smaller piece of Whisper White cardstock to adhere your punched pieces so you can trim off the parts that hang over and have dimension and a clean border with that piece popped up off the card base.
    • Sponge the edges of your punched circles (I used a 1” circle punch and Basic Black ink) to help them be more defined and stand out from your base cardstock.
    • Glue your circles in a line and have full circles hanging off the ends to help you get the size and spacing right.  THEN, turn over your cardstock and trim off the extra parts of the circles.
    • Heat emboss your sentiment for an extra bit of shine and pizzazz.

Mix and match different colors and papers for a different look each time!

  • Project Life Cards Make Great Altered Picture Frames!

Project Life Cards Make Great Altered Picture Frames!

By now, You’ve probably heard of Project Life and know the cards in each kit are great for quick and easy scrapbooking (if you want to learn more about project life, I have a video about it here).  But when they gave a set to us to use for the 2014 Stampin’ Up Convention display boards and use in other ways, I found myself looking at them in a different light.  And thus, this altered picture frame came to be!

I loved this project and even my non-crafty hubby liked it and said he wanted one for his desk at work!  Thankfully the frame is only $1 at Michaels and another set of Everyday Adventure Project Life by Stampin’ up is easy to come by!  So, I’ll be creating another one soon for him.
See all the cards in the kit here.

The idea was to take this chunky frame and then start layering the cards around the edges to create a tiled design.  It all started with the Best Day Every card that is found in the Everyday Adventure Accessory Kit.  I thought it was cool because it is die cut so that you see through the card to whatever is behind it, so I thought it would look neat showing the wood of the frame through the letters.

From there I started laying out other cards that I thought had cool complimentary colors and patterns to fill up the frame.  Once I had the plan, I could flip over the frame and trace the edges of the frame on the back of the Project Life card for any given spot.

Then just trim off the extra paper and glue to your frame.  In my case, I ended up using the Tombow Liquid Glue.  And then finish up the seams by adding some embellishements from the Accessory kit (like those clear hearts) and other items in my craft room (like the rhinestones on the honeycomb card and the wooden accents such as the arrow and banner piece).

It actually came together really quickly and easily.  And did you realize, that the Banner Punch actually is the same width and just a smidge shorter than the banners in the Wooden Accents?  Cool huh?

Finally, I didn’t use it a lot, but I love the Remember This Project Life stamp set and it turned out to be perfect for stamping one of the stickers from the Accessory kit and balancing out everything on my frame!

Its an easy and inexpensive idea for a great gift!

  • Amazing Birthday Thank You Card–Display Board Sample

Amazing Birthday Thank You Card–Display Board Sample

I’m back!  Display Board Stamper logoI made it home from the 2014 Stampin’ Up convention and had a great time.  As I mentioned before, I was honored to be invited to create samples for the display boards this year.  Everyone coming to convention received 3 stamp sets – Amazing Birthday, Kinda Eclectic, and Seasonally Scattered (coming soon in the 2014 Holiday Catalog).  So, as display stampers, we received our sets early and were asked to make 8 projects for each stamp set.  I will admit, this was an intimidating task, especially when I learned the caliber of stampers who were joining me with creating for the boards.  I eventually decided to just think of it as “they will make the stunning over the top cards and I’ll make the simpler card class versions” Winking smile.

I wasn’t allowed to post or share my samples until after Convention, so here we are and I’m excited to start sharing with you!

Thank You card with Amazing Birthday

When I first saw this stamp set, I kept thinking I needed to make birthday cards.  But then it hit me, there is this sentiment that doesn’t need to be birthday at all!  So, I started pulling different colors and stamped images together to create this card.

But you want to know the best part?  I mailed this card in to Stampin’ Up in the beginning of June (so they could get the Display Boards together in time) and then on the last day of convention, Shelli Gardner showed this card during her main stage presentation!

Sure they aren’t exactly the same, but my the similarities are there!  It made me feel extra proud of my card that I could have had a little moment where my design idea overlapped with the creative inspiration from the head of Stampin’ Up!

In both cases, we used the striped banner stamp to form a layer between the Starburst pieces – hers pointed out and mine pointed in (you can’t see the banner tips because they are under the Pumpkin Pie starburst.  Plus that super fun Surprise circle for our center element.  With everything popped up on dimensionals of course!

Oh, here is the stamp set we were both working form so you can see what we were using!image

Stampin’ Up Convention 2014–Check In Day

I told my mom that I wasn’t going to stay up until 3 again… but somehow it is 2:30am and so I’m going to have to keep this quick.  But I couldn’t go to bed without sharing some of the fun that is happening here in Salt Lake City!  Oh, but first:

Ok, now on to the fun stuff, right?  Here is your 2014 Stampin’ Up Convention recap for check in day:

karen swap creating on a plane

We left hot and sunny Seattle early in the morning (we being my mom, Kathy, and myself) to fly to Salt Lake City for the Stampin’ Up convention.  The night before I learned that Karen (one of my downline and Fun n’ Crafty stamper) had not been able to make cards for a swap due to life circumstances.  And since I knew she would have tried if it was all possible for her to do it, I decided to surprise her by creating 25 card swaps for her while on the plane…

ok, I didn’t finish them all on the plane, but I did get the stamping done!  the rest we finished at the hotel. Smile

Fun n Crafty Stampin Up convention display board setup

Then after some lunch, myself, Kathy, and Karen headed in to the Gathering Place and the display boards to start setting up the board that my group had been asked to fill.  We have some fantastic stampers in our Fun n’ Crafty group and I was so excited to be able to share some of their creations with everyone at convention!

(For those of you that love display board pictures, check back tomorrow when I’m allowed to officially post pictures Winking smile)

We went off to a group dinner and stamping with some friends and then soon it was 6pm and time for Convention bag pick up and the Paper Pumpkin Night Out party!  As you can see, a lot of people were excited to get their convention bag.

I got in and out of line 3 times over the course of the evening but turns out the “B” line or “A/B” line (since we were picking up based on our last name) was a popular one this year. Smile

    Rich Jutkins convention bag stuffing

Something fun to see… Rich Jutkins (the President of Stampin’ Up) and Sara Douglas and her family all were helping get bags and supplies put together for use!  It’s not everyday you see executives for a company getting down and dirty helping serve the rank & file.  And this is one of the many reasons why we love them!

Then it was off to the party with lots of cookies and cake treats, a make & take featuring the September 2014 Paper Pumpkin kit, prizes, and a couple displays (though the lighting was terrible for photos).

I’m so grateful to be able to attend many of the Stampin’ Up events and thought it was so cool to get a chance to hang out for a few minutes with Stampin’ Up home office staff and stamper extrordinaire – Shannon West – and the oh so sweet Andrea Withers who has been the coordinator for all my Convention Display Board activities this year!  <3 them!

And eventually I got my bag and all the goodies it contained (stamps and supplies for this weekends crafting projects, including NEW sneak peek stuff!!)

The Convention bag this year is actually a nice bag that is perfectly sized for tablets (or a few stamp cases as I discovered).  It isn’t huge, but that is probably a good thing for me! Have you seen how full I stuff my bags??! Smile

These aren’t all the photos I took, these photos and more are up on my Facebook Page and I’ll be sharing more over the next few days while I’m out and about the conference and then posting many of them at night.  So, make sure you have liked my page to get all the updates!

Ok, and now I REALLY need to get some sleep.  My alarm goes off in 3 hrs!

  • Quick Nuts About You Card Candy Share

Quick Nuts About You Card Candy Share

I had really grand plans for getting all my photos edited and blog posts written for this week so that when I was going crazy trying to get everything in line before heading to the Stampin’ Up convention tomorrow, they would be up for you…..

So, uh, yeah… that didn’t happen.

But I’ve at least had a couple posts to Instagram and Facebook.  But I wanted to get a quick post up for you today and then while I’m on the plane tomorrow morning, I’ll be editing photos like a mad women so not only will you have all the photos from the Convention activities, but you’ll have even more blog posts all ready and waiting for when I get back.  Seriously, I’ve had too many fun display board projects that I haven’t been able to share until after convention starts, that I CAN’T WAIT to start sharing them!

    nuts about you card candy

In the meantime, I thought I would share with you the final swap I created for convention this year.  This is for a “Card Candy” swap I’m in.

What is card candy you ask?  Basically it is small hand crafted embellishments (like those layered stickers you see in big box stores).  In this case, we each started with a 2”x2” square and using only the new 2014 In Colors and Neutrals came up with some embellishment that could be used on a future project.  I just loved those cute squirrels from the Hostess Set Nuts About You that I had to give them a go!

Alright, I’m off to finish packing… but be sure to come back by the rest of the week to see all the Convention adventures!!

Oh, and for those of you who love a good deal, here are this week’s weekly deals:’

It’s Almost Here! Keep Up on All the 2014 Stampin’ Up Convention News!

imageThis weekend I am going to be frantically trying to finish my card swaps, packing, and making last minute display projects for the 2014 Stampin’ Up Convention – aka Inspire Create Share 2014!

    image

I’m always so excited to go because I always see amazing talks, get super project ideas, see friends I haven’t seen in a long time, and this year I can’t wait because all the attendees will get to see the 2014 Holiday Catalog too!  Whoop Whoop!

Now, the last few years, I’ve tried to post often from the convention floor to share the experience and then each night share a blog post with the highlights of the day.  So I wanted to make sure you all knew the best ways to make sure you were catching all the news.

    Follow me on Facebook

Over on my Northwest Stamper facebook page, I share projects and crafting chat each day throughout the year, but during Stampin’ Up events, I am often sitting in my seat sharing periodic updates throughout the day. Smile

    Give Instagram a Try!

Now, I can’t promise as much here yet, but if you’ve been following me over on Instagram, I’ve started sharing sneak peek photos of projects I’ve been working on and my real life crafting adventures.  I’ve only just started using this platform, but I’ve found it to be a fun place to post little insight peeks into my crafting world.  I’ll be trying to post some extra photos there as well throughout the week.  So if you are on Instagram, come check it out!
