  • Review of the new Stampin’ Trimmer by Stampin’ Up!

I’ll admit I get excited everytime I hear a delivery truck go by followed shortly by a doorbell ring… but yesterday I was more excited than normal.  All because my new Stampin’ Trimmer was set to arrive and after 5 months of anticipation, I finally got to play with one on my craft table!

So the first thing I did was open the box… and then open the box that contained the trimmer.  And as Nicholas, my 2 1/2 yr old said,” Wow, that’s cool!”.  No seriously, he wanted to stand on a stool in my kitchen to watch me pull it out of the box and that is what he said!  He then proceeded to tell me how to use it, but that is another story. 🙂

    Stampin Trimmer by Stampin Up!

I decided to shoot a quick video after the kids went to bed to show you all the cool features but since I know that I’m not going to be able to get it all edited in time for this blog post, I figured I’d write up my review and give you a few pictures and then try to post my video for you by tomorrow.  Between the two, I should cover all the new and improved features that make it something that I was excited about.

    1.  Easier Card Base Cutting

Its true; the feature I was most excited about was actually just the fact that you get a wider platform without having to extend the arm of the cutter for additional cutting measurements.  So, whereas before I could easily cut a card base that was 4 1/4” x 11”, if I wanted to cut 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, that required me to clear off more space on my table and extend the side arm.  And heaven help me if I needed to cut something at 5 1/4” or 5”… I got good at getting close, but it was always a bit of a guess.

    But check this out:

cutting a card base from trimmer 1

See, it totally fits!  With room to spare even!  How much room?  You get 6 1/4 inches wide to play with and over 12 inches long.  So, if you are a card maker or do 6×6 scrapbook pages, you are golden with the trimmer as is.  And it still feels pretty compact too.  I would happily put this in my table top tote and bring it with me to a crop or scrapping retreat.

    Close up of card measurement

    2.  Better (mostly) Numbers and Gridlines on the Surface

So, if I’m going to be honest, I’m pretty happy with how they did the surface measurements on the trimmer.  I love how the gridlines and numbers are UNDER a laminated surface, so they won’t rub off over time!  I never had that happen with my old trimmer but I know enough people who had problems with their little Fiskars cutter doing this that I’m very happy about this innovation.

I also discovered while filming my video that it is actually awesome that they have the measurements both above and below the raised lip that makes sure your paper is straight.  Why is that awesome?  Because I found that when I was trying to get my paper to a certain measurement (like say the 5 1/2” mark in the photo above) I used the lines on the inside of the lip to place my paper; but if I was trying to confirm how long my paper was or wanted at a glance reference of where my paper was placed, seeing the full ruler with numbers outside/above the lip made it super quick to tell where I was at.

slid paper in the Stampin Trimmer**I miss the key measurements written on the middle of the trimmer.

Like how it would show you where 8 1/2” and 6” was in the middle of the trimmer surface.  I didn’t realize how much I used them to verify which side of my cardstock was the 8 1/2” side vs the 11” side that I had been cutting strips off of.  I know there is the ruler on the blade track, but it was easier with it written on the surface.  We’ll see how much I miss it overtime.

**However, I LOVE the grid lines!

I thought the grid lines were pretty and all but it wasn’t until I started cutting that I realized how handy they would be.  Have you ever been cutting a piece of paper and found yourself thinking “I swear this paper is straight and flush against the raised edge of the trimmer, but is it really straight?”.  I found with multiple trimmers that I could have something that I thought was straight but one end could be up to 1/4” off from where I thought I was cutting on the other side.

So I love the grid lines because I can be sure that my paper is straight.  And, at least when your trimmer is new, the surface has some “cling” (not a residue cling, more like a static or surface tension cling) that helps hold the paper in place as well.

    3.  Longer and Sturdier (and Flush!) Extender Arm

So, I didn’t give the extender arm much though, but once I was told about the differences between this trimmer and my old trimmer, I think I’m going to come to appreciate them more that I expected.

    Stampin Trimmer with arm extended

The arm is pretty stiff when you try to pull it out.  I’m just warning you now.  I tried to pull it out and I thought it was stuck for a few minutes.  Nope, you just have to really want to extend that arm. 🙂  It seems like it is getting a bit easier the more I use it, but that could just be me getting used to how much I have to pull.

It is also very stiff to get fully extended so that it is perpendicular to your trimmer base.  Again, I thought maybe mine was broken, but after deciding to just go for it… I pushed hard and it snapped into place.  Similarly, it is very stiff to pull the arm back in.  But just commit to it and I think it gets easier over time.

That said, the extended arm is very sturdy.  And it is the same height as the base of the trimmer; so you don’t have to worry about the fact that your paper is sagging like you did with the older trimmers.

    Stampin Trimmer extended arm

Oh, and there is a little plastic leg that flips down to keep it sturdy and holding the arm in place.  Kind of neat.

It also extends out to a full 14 1/2”, so you have lots of space for scoring larger projects or cutting larger pieces of cardstock.

full length of Stampin Trimmer extended arm

    4.  Improvements on the Back side

Stampin Trimmer back sideSo, normally I don’t spend too much time looking at the back side of tools like this, but I appreciate that Stampin’ Up! didn’t waste the space.  There are 2 cool features to see on the bottom of your trimmer:

    1.  Non-skid feet – 5 of them to be exact keep your trimmer where you want it

    but even better:

    2.  A HUGE storage compartment!!  And it not only has a clear cover so you can see what you are storing, but it also has dividers so you can put a whole bunch of back up supplies in there and take them with you to a class/crop/retreat and be organized and easy to grab.  I would store extra blades, adhesive refills, and tools like tweezers and bone folders for when I was traveling.

    Love it!

    5.  A Few More Hits and Misses

So, there are a ton more cool features and since this post is getting long, I’ll just quickly point out a few more that I find really useful:

    • The ruler/track is totally clear!  Makes it way easier to see where my paper is actually lining up.
    • The blades have an extra arm to help lock them in place on the track.  No more blades flying off when you lift up the trimmer or track.  I also haven’t figured out the right way to get the blades off, but I bet if I read the instruction book it will tell me. 🙂
    • The track has a switch that locks it in place (down) on the trimmer!  Again, no more track flying open when you pick up your trimmer or pull it out of your craft tote.
    • You can fit BOTH the scoring and cutting blade on the trimmer AND have a piece of 12×12 paper without worrying about your paper getting cut.  Yay! So much easier to have the blades ready to go but still out of the way.stampin trimmer with a 12x12 piece of paper 1
    • Stampin Trimmer with larger paper in cutting areaI was asked about whether a piece of 12×12 patterned paper that had an extra trim strip (usually for manufacturer information or the name of the paper pattern) – and thus being longer than 12” on one side” – would fit in the trimmer so you could cut off strips without needing to cut the trim…The answer is sort-of.
See, I tried it with a piece of paper I had at home and found that the bottom lip of the trimmer is just a smidge too close for the paper to lie flat on the trimmer. But the nice thing is that the track is so long that the blades sit well below where your paper ends and so you can easily slide your paper flush against the lip at the top of the page and then slide the cutter all the way down and past the end of the paper and edge strip.

But one nice thing is that the clear track/ruler doesn’t press longer paper onto the raised lip.  If you had the old Fiskars style trimmer (like the old SU trimmer with the orange blades) you may have run into this before where a paper that was longer than 12 inches would get bent when you tried to cut part of it because the track compressed the paper flush to the surface of the trimmer and then the paper bent up over the bottom edge of the trimmer.  This is WAAAY better!

Stampin Trimmer with bigger than 12x12 paper

    • Finally, I like that you get both a scoring blade and a cutting blade with the trimmer by default.  If you are looking at the pictures: Gray is for scoring, Black is for trimming.  And they both sit easily stored at the end of the track.I tried both blades and discovered that they had a learning curve.

The cutting blade requires more pressure than you probably would expect.  If you watch the video when I post it, you will see it took me 3 tries to cut a strip of cardstock on one slide along the track.  The first attempt, I was too impressed with how smooth it glided along the track that I didn’t put much pressure on.  The second attempt I added more pressure, but it wasn’t enough.  By attempt 3, I had it figured out and it cut great for me ever since.

The scoring blade works well, but I prefer my Simply Scored or other scoring boards for scoring card bases.  I could probably add more pressure to the scoring blade to get a better impression; but I found that while it scored straight and easily, it wasn’t as deep of a groove (and thus as easy to fold) as when I use my Simply Scored.  I will, however, like this blade for when I’m doing techniques like Faux Tiling or scoring lines on my card for decoration.

** One tip – the cutting blade is sharp! **
I just have to give out that tip because while filming my video, I was feeling the cutting blade because it didn’t cut as I expected and I totally sliced the tip of my thumb!  It proved to me that it has a serious blade in a little tiny package. 🙂

Alright, so that is a lot of info and I think I covered most of it.  And at the end of my brief evening playing with my new toy, I am still super excited about it and think even with its less than perfect aspects, it is still a big step forward over what I had before and I think it is going to be just what I wanted!

I’m sure I missed something with this review and so I’ll try to get the video edited together today so I can get it posted for you soon.  Then you can see some of these features in action!

But in the meantime, if you have any questions about the trimmer, how it works, or its features – leave me a comment or shoot me an email at jennifer@nwstamper.com and I’d be glad to answer them for you!

If you are a demonstrator (or sign up to become a demonstrator), you can order your trimmer now.

If you are not a demo, you can order your trimmer starting in November! (and if you don’t have a demonstrator, I’d love to help you get your own Stampin’ Trimmer 🙂 )

So please check back soon for the video and I hopefully will give you a better feel for the new Stampin’ Trimmer!

  • Manly Monday Card–Happy Hour

So, I’m coming off a fun weekend where my Fabulous Fall class focused on fall colors and cards that could be used for guys.  So, while I go take pictures of those cards, I thought I would share another card that I love that follows in that theme of fall and/or manly cards.

(I would say this is a masculine card – makes me think of an old style man’s home library with old books, the leather back chairs and brandy on the shelf…. but then I think if you squint it could be fall colors too… or is that too much of a stretch?) 🙂

    designed by Lori Staley

I actually received this card as a swap and loved all the textures and patterns.  It was also what make me fall in love with the Naturals Designer Buttons.  I thought these buttons were actually wood but really they are a resin that is made to look like wood… just so you know what to expect if you see them in person.  But I think they are still great looking anyway!

Another thing I loved about this card is the scoring around the stamped image in the middle.  You can just take your Simply Scored tool or a bone folder and your trimmer and score lines about 1/4” from the edge of your mat (in this case the Early Espresso cardstock) on all sides to create that frame.

Here is another picture to help show the scoring:

And finally, isn’t it cool how the Argyle embossing folder, International Bazaar dsp, and Happy Hour stamp set all have similar patterns so they look perfect all stuck together?  Got to love when you can coordinate like this.

So that is what I like about this card, but I’d love to hear what you think.  What is your favorite part of the card?

  • Pennant Parade “Framed” Christmas Card

I hear from almost everyone I meet when stamping the infamous phrase “I’m not creative”… so I thought for this month’s team meeting, I’d share an idea for a card that was completely inspired by a card in our demonstrator magazine Stampin’ Success.  It was all about taking an idea you see somewhere, getting inspired by the idea, and then making it your own.

In this case, the idea was to punch or die cut a hole in a piece of cardstock and popping it up on dimensionals (foam dots) to give you a frame.  Then placing a cut or punched element in the middle of the frame.  In my case, I was inspired to pull out my Pennant Parade stamp set!

Pennant Parade Christmas Tree full card

So, all the folks who attended my meeting in person got to make one of these cards themselves and everyone else I shared how to make the card via webcam.  But the key elements is to take a piece of Gumball Green cardstock (in this case a 4”x4” piece) and slide the 2 1/2” circle punch as far in as it will go towards the center of the cardstock.  Punch out your hole and run the remaining square through your Big Shot to add texture.

    Pennant Parade Christmas Tree card

I added a piece of patterned paper from the Festival of Prints designer paper stack behind the circle cut out – directly on the card base.

Then everything else was popped up for dimension.  It looks like a lot but is actually a really fast and easy card since the tree is punched out with the Pennant Builder punch and the Merry was punched out with the Word Window punch.

But try this card idea with layering other punch shapes or your favorite framelit for different looks and styles!

  • Halloween Colors but not a Halloween Card

This afternoon, I finally got to have some quality time with Photoshop on my computer and finished editing a bunch of project photos to share here on my blog.  However, when the time came to pick what to share with you tonight, I kept gravitating towards Christmas cards, and while I can’t wait to share more holiday ideas with you, I just wanted to give Halloween and pretty fall colors their time too.  🙂

So I thought I would share this card I received as a swap at convention that I just loved.  I thought it was so pretty and a great way to show that a few simple punches and some tied ribbon can make a big impression.

I don’t know who the designer was of this card since there is no name or contact info on it (though if you do know, please let me know so I can give proper credit!) but whoever you are, thanks for the great inspiration!

All the butterflies are from the Papillion Potpourri stamp set and the main butterfly was punched using the new butterfly punch.  Yes, I know what is going on my Christmas and Birthday wish list!  I just love the versatility I see in this stamp set and punch.  Does anyone really miss the old butterfly punch?  🙂

Anyway, hope you enjoyed this non-Christmas inspiration.  I’ll be back again with more Christmas cards soon!

PS – Ready for the new Stampin’ Trimmer?

  • Pretty Perfectly Preserved Pears

Talk about a tongue twister, huh!?  🙂

Well, after a great weekend away with my mom (we flew to Utah late last week for a weekend scrapbooking retreat in Utah), I’m back and blogging.  I have to say, there is nothing like a weekend dedicated to creating and actually having the time to get some projects done!  I was on the plane flying home and was ready and eager to finish the project I was in the middle of and keep the creative ball rolling.  Of course then reality (and dentist appointments and household tasks) cropped up today… but still!

Anyway, enough about me… how about a cute card to look at?

    Perfectly Preserved In Color Card

This card was created by the awesome designers at Stampin’ Up!  (see, I love the resources and inspiration provided by Stampin’ Up! because I know I wouldn’t have thought of this color combination for pears – but isn’t it pretty?!

Plus this card shows some fun ways to use some of the new goodies from the Holiday catalog.

Quickcan you guess how many new items are showcased in this card?
    Just a fun little challenge.

    Alright, you ready?

    1.  Perfectly Preserved stamp set

    2.  Cannery framelits

    3.  Orchard Harvest designer paper

    4.  Woodgrain embossing folder

    5.  Brushed Bronze designer buttons

And the colors, that I was saying I didn’t think of for pears are Calypso Coral, Lucky Limeade, and Island Indigo (sigh… Island Indigo… I have a serious crush on this color right now! 🙂 )

So, hope you enjoyed the card and I’ll be back soon with more ideas for you!

  • 10–11-12 — Giveaway!!

I know, I’m a little late to the game, but I realized that today is October 11th, 2012… which means today is:

    My Project 9-001

Well, since I always love an excuse to do something different and fun, I decided to put together a little giveaway for this fun alignment of dates. 🙂

So, I have a challenge for you!

    My 10/11/12 –13 Challenge

Today, create any project – a card, scrapbook page, wall hanging, digital printable, gift bag, etc – and include “13” in it somehow.

You have lots of options for interpreting that but it could be 13 pieces of paper, 13 buttons, 13 brads, 13 stamped images… or even just the number 13!

Once you’ve created your project, post it to my Facebook page or email me a photo at jennifer@nwstamper.com to show your completed project.  I’ll highlight some of the projects I receive and to add to the fun, will even do a random drawing from everyone who posts to send a little thank you prize!

I know I’ll be giving away a new Gold Dazzle Pen and depending on how many people participate, I’ll keep adding more to the pile from my stash. 🙂

    image

    Challenge deadline:

I am heading out of town tonight, so I’ll do the drawing when I get home on Sunday 10/14 at 11pm PST.  So, work on your projects today and get them posted by this weekend!

I can’t wait to see what you create!

  • Orchard Harvest Thinking of You Card

Orchard Harvest was one of those designer papers that I loved as soon as I saw it in the catalog and so I had to get some.  But then my fear of using things up kicked in and I just looked at it and couldn’t bring myself to cut it up.

Well… as I look at my box of retired designer papers that I also couldn’t bear to use up… I am trying to get better and actually enjoy the papers and share them with others. 🙂  So, here is the first step – a fun fall card!

I tried to mix up a few textures and dimension with this card.  We have the patterned paper, embossed Lucky Limeade paper using the Stripes embossing folder, some Stitched Satin ribbon, and then the smallest sized Labels framelit for the sentiment.

I have to admit though, my favorite thing about this card is that I used the colors that were found in the Orchard Harvest paper to pick the other elements of the card.  And so because of that, I discovered that More Mustard and Raspberry Ripple can actually go together!  I would never have thought those colors could go together but they totally do!

  • Getting Monochromatic with the 2012 In Colors

I have a friend who hosts Stampin’ Up! workshops for me from a couple states away (she lives in Colorado, I live in Washington), so I send her a project and some fun samples to share with her friends who come over to stamp.

This time, I wanted to let everyone see what the new In Colors really look like in person – from the ink, to the cardstock, to the ribbon, and even the dahlias!  I mean, they look nice in the catalog but its kind of like ordering clothes online.  The picture looks great but what will it really look like when you get it home.  So, I took on the challenge to create a set of cards that showcased each color and this is the results:

Each card uses the Mixed Bunch stamp set at the base image and then uses the new 1-1/4” scallop circle punch and the Boho Blossoms punch to build up the flower.  Then some Stitched satin ribbon wrapped around the card and a Dahlia on top and you are done!  These were quick to put together but definitely POP in person.

Now the only question is which color I like best. 🙂

  • Fluttering Hearts Wedding Card with Framelits

I love it when I find a great idea for a card that I can tweak and make my own (with so much amazing talent and inspiration out there… its nice to have some brilliant ideas to start from!)

Well, today’s card came from a mass-produced card I saw probably 9 months back.  I wish I had saved the original photo so I could say where exactly it was from – but since I took way longer to make my version than I expected, I’m totally drawing a blank.  So, let me describe what I saw – it was a simple white card with butterfly wings partially cut out of the white cardfront and a solid color showing through under the wings.  The wings were still attached to the cardfront, they just were bent up for dimension.

I thought it was one of the prettiest cards I had seen in a while!

However, I couldn’t figure out how to make a card with partial cut-outs on my cardfront, so I went with the next best thing – Framelits!

Yep! I placed my Hearts framelits in the middle of the page and cut out my hearts.  Then I adhered a piece of Island Indigo cardstock behind my Whisper White card front.  Crease the hearts and adhere the creased line to the Island Indigo paper to make the heart line back up.

I bent up the edges and added some Dazzling Details to the centers of each heart to add a little sparkle.  So you get the peek-a-boo effect with the Island Indigo below the hearts.

Add some ruffled ribbon and a tag made with the Jewelry Tag punch and Tiny Tags stamp set, and you have a pretty card that would be perfect for a wedding or anniversary.

It also looks like a lot of work, but actually, aside from waiting for the Dazzling Details to dry, it is pretty easy!

Oh, and if anyone figures out doing this with butterflies, please let me know because I’d love to try it!

  • Peek-a-boo Emboss Resist with Raining Flowers

Oops, I was so focused on getting the first week of my 12 weeks of Christmas newsletter ready that I totally got behind and forgot to get this post up! Well, I’m fixing that now.  (and if you want to get exclusive holiday ideas sent to your inbox, just make sure you are on my mailing list and you will be all set!  And can I just say I LOVE the first project…. soooo elegant. Smile)

This is another fun idea for how to use your clear embossing powders.  I don’t know what the “official” name for this technique is called – so I’m going to call it Peek-a-boo Emboss Resist.

imageTo get this effect, you want to find some fun pattern of designer paper and stamp your SOLID stamp image (like this flower from the Raining Flowers stamp set) onto the paper with Versamark ink.  Cover with clear embossing powder and heat with your heat gun.

Now, use your brayer to run a dark color over your designer paper until you can’t see the paper’s pattern any more.  The embossed areas will resist the ink (you can take a tissue and wipe off any extra ink that is trying to stick around).  So, your pattern will show through the inked area and “peek-a-boo” through!

I will say, the hardest part is picking what pattern to show under your stamped image… at least for me. Smile  I had to hold up paper patterns and stamp images to my mom to decide what to try out for this card and so, thanks to her for this card!

This was one of the cards we made for my Awesome Embossing class.  I’m thinking of putting this class together as an online class.  So, let me know if you would like to see this as an online class and I’ll make sure to put it together to share!

  • Masculine Card using Affection Collection?

So I put a question mark at the end of my blog title because I’m trying to decide if this card counts as “masculine” or not.  It definitely isn’t flowery, or pink, or have lots of lace and bows.  So I think it counts.  But take a look and you can decide for yourself.

Have I mentioned yet that I’m having a total love affair with Island Indigo right now?  Some of my favorite cards highlight Island Indigo and I’m already feeling like 8 months isn’t enough time to love this color before it’s term as an In Color ends.  So, hopefully you don’t mind it because you’ll be seeing a lot more I’m sure! Smile

This was a quick card that I made to show a few of the new items in the Holiday catalog including:

    * the woodgrain embossing folder

    * the 7/8” Cotton ribbon

    * the Affection Collection stamp set

I was in a rush and so I didn’t want to wait for the ink to dry if I stamped on the ribbon; so instead I stamped next to the ribbon.  I also grabbed the awesome Decorative Label punch and stamped and sponged the sentiment.  Then I took two more punchouts of the same shape and cut them to give me the matting I wanted for the sentiment.  (If you don’t already know how that works, let me know and I can put together a video to share it!)

My favorite thing about this card is how the Early Espresso sponging around the Friends sentiment layered over the Cajun Craze matting somehow makes it look like the edges are rounded and dimensional!

PS – Did you hear the other announcements from Stampin’ Up! yesterday?

3 stamp sets that you can buy individuals stamps out of… lowered printing prices with My Digital Studio…and a survey to help Stampin’ Up! pick a project kit to offer in the near future!  Check out this blog post to see all the details!
