    Continuing in my sharing of the fabric technique cards we made at a recent class using the Stampin’ Up! designer fabrics, and I thought I would post a couple more today.

    Sure, this is the most basic way to use fabric… but its fun!  And while I grew up with a mom who is a fantastic sewer, I never quite go into it and so didn’t internalize some of the basics.  So, I was excited to be reminded by Bethani about the fact that when you tear a piece of fabric, it will give you a wonderfully straight edge every time.  I’m so used to paper that will has a complete mind of its own when it comes to tearing, so I was thinking I had to use a cutter for every edge.  Sure, the tear gives you a slightly feathered look… but it’s a CUTE feathered look.

    I just LOVE how this turned out!  Most of the card is pretty self-explanatory.  We stamped the flower image on the base cardstock in Versamark, and then did simple sponging and punching for the other elements.  And then we get to the fabric flower…SO FUN!! 

    Ok, to make the flower, we cut out 4 flower shapes – in this case using the Cherry Blossom embosslit.  Once you have those four flower shapes, take a small square cut from a Sticky Pages sheet.  Expose one side of the Sticky Page square and then take one of the fabric flowers and fold it in half.  Place that folded flower on half of your sticky square.  Next, take your 2nd fabric flower, fold it in half, and place it on the sticky square so that it overlaps the the first fabric flower and now forms an “L” shape.  Ok, on to fabric flower 3.  You guessed it!  Fold it in half!  Place it on the sticky square so that it overlaps flower 2 and the folded edge is flush against the folded edge of flower 1.  Finally, grab and fold flower 4.  Place it on the sticky square so that the folded edge is flush with flower 2, its right corner is on top of flower 3 and its left corner is under the right corner of flower 1.  At this point you should have a flower that is stuck to the Sticky Pages square.  I then pierced a hole in the center with the paper piercer and placed an antique brad.  Then remove the remaining backing on the sticky square and place where you want it!  In my card, I layered it on a Rose Red scallop circle that was punched using the 2 3/8” scallop circle.

  • Fun Birthday Wishes Card

    While working on the sample for my upcoming Birthday Card Kit and Organizer class, I was trimming pieces from the cheerful Celebrations designer series paper.  After one of my cuts, I looked at the leftover scrap and thought it was the coolest accidental trimming I had ever done and I just had to use it in a card.  That scrap was the long skinny piece in this card with the colored circles making an awesome scallop edge down the paper.  How fun is that?

    I used the Party Hearty stamp set and the Sale-a-Bration set So Happy For You for the sentiments but mostly let the paper do the cheering in this card.   This isn’t one of the cards from my class but it definitely was inspired from some of the cards we’ll be making. 🙂

  • A Masculine Birthday

    Here is a quick share for the day; it is my attempt at a masculine birthday card.  My brother-in-law had his 30th birthday and I needed to get some card off to him.  I didn’t want to use a tree set and many of my stamp sets used cutesy animals or had lots of flowers, neither of which scream manly man. 🙂  So, I relied heavily on colors to man-up this card.

    I had some fun with my Party Hearty stamp set by paper piecing the party hats.  I stamped with my Dusty Durango ink and then stamped again on a piece of dsp so I could cut out two more of the party hats to glue over the stamped image.  I also used one of the Texture Plates for the BigShot to create the diamond background in Soft Suede.  The one other piece you might not be able to see, I punched out the Celebrate You stamped image and then behind that punchout, I adhered a scallop circle punch in Dusty Durango.

  • Technique night – Masking and Reverse Masking

    Last night was my August technique night with my meetup group and we focused on masking and reverse masking.  For those of you not familiar with masking, this is the technique for using paper to cover (or mask) the area you don’t want to get inked.  So, in this first card we did, you stamp the colored cupcake on your paper and then stamp another copy of the cupcake on scratch paper.  Cut out the scrap cupcake and place over your original stamped image and then stamp your next cupcake, overlapping the scrap paper and your original image.  This gives the illusion of one cupcake being in front of the other without seeing the overlapping ink.   We also used the scrap cupcake to mask the frosting area when we stamped the candle so that you could choose the height of the candle and not have it overlap the top of the cupcake.

    Next we did reverse masking.  This is where you cut out your scrap image and set your image aside and use the cut-out frame to let you add ink to the inside of the framed area.  In this case we sponged first and then while still keeping the frame in place, stamped our leaves images. This card was inspired by a card I found on the Stampin Up demo resource – Stampin Cconnection.  The origional was created by Allison Ohran. 

    Finally we did one more card that combined both techniques.  We used reverse masking to make the sun and then placed the cut-out circle back on the sun and a scrap cutout of the treetop to mask the areas before sponging our sky.

    Now, some tips:

    Tip: When cutting out smaller shapes and circles, post-it notes work great for giving you something that can stick in place and then come up without leaving a mark.  For bigger shapes and frames, use a little bit of Dotto.  This adhesive lets you put your mask down and then pull it up an rub off any adhesive that gets left behind.

    Tip: While I normally recommend stamping on Whisper White cardstock because it holds ink much better than standard white cardstock and computer paper, for the scrap image you are going to use for your mask, I would recommend in that case to use computer paper.  Because the paper is thinner, you tend to be able to get ink closer to the edge of your mask and so get a cleaner look.

  • Playing with Pastels

    ahhh… it feels good to back at the blog.  I just getting over a yucky cold and just in time because my technique night was last night.  We were playing with pastel chalks and between my cold and my half-cleaned craft room, I got a bit of a late start preparing for it.  However, I’m happy to report that I’ve made huge progress on my craft room (you can now fit chairs at the table and the table is cleaned off for the first time since moving here last fall :))!  Of course, in the process of prepping for the class last night, my craft table is a mess… so I get that straightened up and share it with you.

     

    But in the meantime, I thought I’d share what I whipped up as samples for some different techniques.  This was actually my first time in a long time that I had used my chalks and I discovered they are a lot more fun than I remembered.  And the girls did some awesome work with them – I just need to remember to take pictures of what they create!

    The techniques we focused on were popping pastels (the cupcake and the butterflies), coloring an embossed image (the blue scalloped flower), coloring ribbon (the blue ribbon), chalkboard technique (the red flower), and using chalks directly on the stamp to color a stamped image (some of the background flowers on the heartfelt card).

     

    pastel_ribbon_wmThe flower started out as clear embossing powder over versamark on whisper white paper. After you have embossed your flower, you can take a sponge to your chalk to pick up some color and then rub the sponge over the embossed image to color it. I recommend using brighter colors though because my first attempt with a light blue barely showed up. This card was made using the brilliant blue chalk. And with chalks it is very easy to layer colors. One person, used orange as a base color and then used rose red to color the edges.

     

    And yes, this is a white ribbon! Use the same sponge to apply color to your ribbon by rubbing along the white ribbon.  You can use sealent afterwards to keep it from rubbing off on your hands but it doesn’t rub off much if you don’t.

     

    chalkboard_heartfelt_wm This card used the chalkboard technique where you stamp with white craft ink on a dark paper and then pick up the chalk color using a q-tip or applicator.  Once you have the color, you want to tap your stamped image to apply the chalk.  Don’t rub or you will have a lovely smear of white and chalk in places you may not want. 🙂  Once you have applied your colors.  I tapped off excess power and then use a paper towel to lightly wipe off the excess color.  It turns out with a very lovely effect.

  • My card party cards – Love You Much and more

    I just finished cleaning up my kitchen after my card party this afternoon (we stamp in the dining room since right now all my stamping stuff is on tv trays and a bookcase in there).  Today, in addition to the ladies who were stamping with me, their young daughters were with us as well (ages 4 and 10).  Now, the DH’s were in the living room “watching the children” while we stamped.  But like many guys, they got distracted by TV and video games, so the girls came in and wanted to make cards too.  Thankfully I have a HUGE pile of scrap paper and old stickers that I could never bring myself to throw out because “it’s still good, I might use it one day”. 🙂 So, I let them have at those items and some of my older stamps.  I have a feeling they might grow into crafters. 🙂

    Anyway, today we made 3 cards and one magazine holder for the cards.  I was going to have us make a box or bag but decided since I was in such a groove with the holders (and they are so multi-functional) that we should do that instead.  So, I wanted to share with you what we made.  I have to admit, the cards are CASEd off of some very talented stampers on SCS.  I wasn’t in the designing mood, so I found inspiration online.  Hope you like them!

  • Making door prizes for a crop

    As I’ve said in prior posts, I’m visiting my mom this week to help her out with some events (a party for her on Tuesday and a Crop where we will be demo’ing a free make and take on Saturday). So, yesterday was my day to help make sure we had everything in order for Saturday. Somehow I ended up being focused on door prize items. She has a small bag of handmade items she is going to give away and I decided that she ought to have a couple cards in the bag as well.

    doorprize_stampsSo, I whipped up a couple of cards and then “wrapped” a stamp and ink set that is going into a bigger door prize basket. After wrapping the stamps, I’ve decided I’m officially obsessed with ribbon. I love almost all of the SU ribbon and keep obsessing over how to make a good bow. I have a feeling many of my cards in the future will be including ribbon. 🙂  Oh yeah, and the card on the left is using the new Sweet Stems stamp set.

  • Decorating a Birthday Gift with Stamps

    I’m always looking for ways to use my stamps in different ways.  giftbox_beforeSure I love making cards, but sometimes you need something different and its fun to use your stamping supplies to add that personal touch.  In this case, my sister-in-law’s birthday is 2 days before Christmas.  So, when I bought her a gift at the local soap store, they offered to decorate the box as a gift.  I couldn’t turn down free gift wrapping but after they gave me the wrapped gift, I realized it was really Christmas wrapped.  My birthday is a week before Christmas, so I’m pretty sensitive to differentiating birthday and Christmas gifts, so I wanted to make sure her gift was definately “birthday” and not “christmas”.  So, stamps to the rescue!

     The turtle is from a hostess set from the last catalog, but the tag is from the new Party Hearty set and the Happy Birthday under the turtle is from A Little Birthday Cheer.  This was also my first time in a long time using water color pencils.  They are like magic!  🙂  If you haven’t used them before, you color in an image with the pencils and it looks like normal pencil.  But then, go over the colors with a water pen and suddenly the color blends and instead of pencil marks, you just have a smooth watercolor image.

  • Trying out a new bag style – paper purse

    So, I’ve seen a lot of folks make different paper purses/gift bags/bag in a box/etc and I’ve dabbled a little in making these projects but only a little.  With my mom here for the holidays, she brought lots of project designs and creative motivation.  So I decided to try something new.  These purses are really cute in person and actually really easy to make.

    The stamp set is Party Hearty for the clasp and main bag element with Sprinkles backgrounds on the paper straps.  I admit I completely cut corners when it came to making this sample since I didn’t know what I was doing.  I used some old paper I had lying around and paper instead of ribbon for the straps.  However, it came together pretty well, so I’ll probably make another with my heavier weight SU DSP and ribbon.  Well, gotta get back to crafting!  Gotta use some of the sneak peek stamp sets before mom takes them home with her. 🙂
