  • Quinceanera Treat Bag, Perfect For Any Princess

Well, I hope you had as great of a weekend as I did!  I had relatives from the midwest and California in town for the weekend and so we did a lot of visiting and traveling around the Seattle area.  This was the first time my hubby’s Grandma, Aunt, and Uncle had met our daughter Caitlin; so that was cool as well!  Anyway, that kept me away from my computer and blogging a bit more than I was thinking – so, here I am trying to get caught back up. 🙂

I thought I’d share this cute treat bag we made at the Hispanic Night event at Convention.  This is a free evening activity that is meant to help share some of the cultural differences that you sometimes see with Hispanic families and crafters here in the US.  Its always a very interesting night and there were some AMAZING stamping demonstrations!  And, then we got to stamp ourselves!

So, here is the project we made:

I loved the details like the paper pieced dress (we stamped the image a second time on Pool Party cardstock and then cut out the dress and glued it down onto the Whisper White image), the Silver glimmer paper behind the Apocathary Accents framelit piece, paper piercing the outline of the die cut shape using the matching Paper Piercing Pack, coloring with markers, and then the stamped and punched flowers on the bag!  Just a couple details, right? 🙂

When we got to our table for the event that evening, this is what everyone had (so you can see the whole stamp set too!).  It was the make and take kit, the stamp set, and a bingo sheet.

I have to admit I squealed out loud when I saw the stamp set because I had been eyeing this stamp set for a while because I loved the image of the girl and I thought that the Princess, the crown, and the flower stamps could be used by anyone – regardless of if they spoke Spanish or not.  I just didn’t know anyone who would need a Quinceanera card (for those of you who aren’t familiar with Quinceanera, it is like a cross between a sweet 16 party –only at 15, a coming out event, and at the scale like a wedding!  It’s a pretty big deal!).  Anyway, I was so thankful that Stampin’ Up! gave us this set.

And then, to top off the evening, I got a bingo and won some Glimmer Paper, a Christmas stamp set, and some Stitched Satin Ribbon!  How cool is that?!  And if you can see, check out more of the amazing samples they had on display next to me on the display board.

If you are going to convention next year, I totally recommend going to Hispanic Night.

  • A Blast From the Past (plus Free Stamps too)

Yay! It’s the weekend and this weekend is a fun one for our family as we have relatives from Kansas out to visit for the first time since Caitlin was born. 🙂

Today we are taking the kids (and everyone else) on a ferry ride and heading to Bainbridge Island for a while.  I think Nicholas will love being on the boat and hopefully it will be more checking out the boats and scenery outside and less running around like a crazy person inside the ferry… but I could be dreaming!

Anyway, I finally got all of my retired items updated on my Stamps+ For Sale page and thought I would put together a special BOGO style sale for this next week in the hopes of clearing out the shelf space and giving everyone a great deal in the process!

Check out my Retired Items page for how to get your favs FREE!

In the meantime, I thought I would pull up some fun “blast from the past” cards that use some if the items I have listed.  Hope you enjoy!

  • You’re Amazing Ticket Banner Card from Convention

Alright, today is another share of the Stampin’ Up! convention make & takes.  I LOVED the variety and number of different projects we got to make and I thought that the projects we made with the You’re Amazing stamp set were especially unique.  And I’ll admit, this card is not at all hard to do, it does take a little bit of time to put together. 🙂

There are so many details to this card and after creating it, I think I might just hang it over my desk to remind myself that even when I’m feel low and my self-esteem has taken a hit, that I can have amazing moments too.  And I can remember how much I enjoyed creating this card.

Some tips if you are making a card like this:

    • When using the Essentials Paper Piercing pack to create a dotted outline for a die cut shape or stamped image, I recommend placing the piercing template on your card base first so you can line it up exactly where you want it to be; then do your piercing, and then add in your center piece.
    • If you want to make a string of little punched tickets (or any shape), I stamped my images first, pierced the hole for running the linen thread through, and then punched out the ticket shape.  You can punch them out and stack them up and pierce the hole, but I didn’t want to have to deal with trying to hold onto the little tiny pieces while piercing.
    • I actually tied the linen thread through the end of the die cut shape to help hold the banner up
    • Depending on your personality, you can opt to leave the ticket banner hanging loosely in the front of your card…. or you can be like me and use a glue dot behind each ticket to place it precisely where you want it to go! 🙂  The tickets may not necessarily hang evenly, but at least they will stay put.
    • The little hearts are actually a clever trick of punching out the 4-petal flower from the Itty Bitty Punch pack and then trimming off two of the petals to make a tiny heart.  This makes it even smaller than the single small heart punch.
      image

Like I said, there are a lot of details, but honestly, that is what made this card so fun for me.  If you check out my blog very often, you see that a lot of the projects I tend to make are the more quick and simple cards – cards that have one or two cool details but don’t take much time to put together.  So, when I get to sit down and focus on more details on the card every now and then it is actually pretty relaxing for me. 🙂  Am I the only person like this?

So, even if you don’t have time to do this whole project, hopefully you got some ideas for different elements to try in your projects in the future.  Though I’ll admit, I’m most addicted to my Essential Piercing Pack, what is your favorite piece to try?

  • Christmas Card with the Stained Glass Technique

I’m getting ready for my Crystal Effects technique class tomorrow and I always love running this class because it reminds me to use one of my favorite techniques – the “Stained Glass” technique.  This technique uses Crystal Effects, reinker, and some glitter to let you color in any image on a Window Sheet giving you a pretty look that is reminiscent of a stained glass window.

In this case, we’ll be using the Snow Much Fun stamp set for our image:

I tried doing a close up of the image so you can get a sense of the look you get when you are done.

It is a really easy method for coloring in your images with a lot of wow factor. 🙂  Hope this gave you a fun idea to try on one of your projects soon!

And if you want to join us tomorrow for this class, you can rsvp here!

  • How I Organize My Craft Room

Recently as I reorganized my craft room, I had folks asking to see what I had changed and how I had organized.  So, in one of those very rare moments a few weeks ago where the surfaces in my scrap area were actually clean, I took a few pictures to share with you.

Now that I’m actually writing up the post to go with them, I’m realizing that some of the pictures are dark or I didn’t get a close-up of something I thought was interesting; but in the interest of actually getting this post up (and who knows when I’ll get my room this clean again! Smile) I thought I would share what I have.

So, if you are curious about a part of my organization that I don’t have a close up photo of, leave me a comment and I’ll see about getting a picture and more explanation for you!

    The Big Picture

So, this is a close-to-all-encompassing shot of my craft space.  To the right (behind the cradle) is the sliding glass door to our backyard.  So, when I’m crafting in the afternoon, I actually get some nice natural light.  But in general, I’ve optimized to be out of the way of my 2.5 yr old running in and out of the house and to be within arms reach of my most common supplies.

    my craft room

The Most Used Stuff is in Arm’s Reach!

70-80% of what I use to make most of my projects can be seen in this picture and was my biggest area of optimization so that I could be sitting at my table and just swivel around in my chair and reach what I needed.

my craft room paper and stamp storage

So, the most important things… my stamps, cardstock, ink, and embellishments are right there where I can grab them as I’m designing.  This may seem like a duh moment for you but after almost a year of having things on shelves scattered across the room; this was huge for me.  For example, I was getting soooo sick of wanting to grab a piece of cardstock and being so irritated that I had to get out of my chair and walk across the room to grab a piece of paper. I know totally lazy! But when you are only getting in craft time in 20 minute increments due to overlapping nap times, you suddenly care about every minute!

Anyway, so, let me tell you about some of my favorite things here:

    1.  Having my cardstock right there and easy to grab! I use those magazine holders for your shelves only instead of having them stand upright (so you can see the short front panel facing out) – I tilt them on their back so that what is normally the top is actually facing out.  This gives me tall sides to hold up my paper but maximizes allowing me to see the colors I have and I don’t have to take the holders off the shelf to get a piece of cardstock out!

    2.  I’m storing my 12×12 designer series paper in those colored milk-crates on the bottom shelves.  I have struggled for years to figure out how to store my 12×12 paper in such a way that I can easily tell what I have and find the right paper to use on a give project.  This is my favorite method to date.  I keep my 12×12 packs in big ziploc bags and then put all the bags in a single crate.  Because of the wide open top, I can slide the crate forward and then start flipping through my paper packs – kind of like folks used to do with records in record stores!  I found that if I kept my paper in big magazine-style holders like I do my cardstock, I couldn’t easily flip through and I would often forget what I had.  Usually until after I finished a project and then I would see something and think – “that would have been perfect for the project I just finished! Oh well!”

    3. Can you tell I love my Stack and Store embellishment caddiesSmile  Seriously, LOVE THEM!  Again, this came down to me realizing that if I can’t easily see the embellishment, I’m not going to remember to use it.  These things spin like a dream and I can use empty embellishment containers to store extras of random stuff I’ve been hording for years.  I swear I’ll use everything someday… no really…. !

    4.  Stamps and Ink are right there!  I used to have my retired stamps over in a cupboard and my current stamps near by.  But I realized that separating them out like that meant I NEVER used my retired stamps and also had a false sense of how many stamps I had because I only saw the current ones.  So, now I have all my stamps grouped together and just have marked on the outside of the stamp boxes which stamps are retired.

Here is a closer in picture of the IKEA shelf unit next to the “arm’s reach bookshelf”:

    my craft room ikea drawers

I can spin my Ink caddy from my chair and then the top drawer of my unit contains all my different adhesives and adhesive bling.  So, when I need a Stampin’ Dimensional or some Sticky Strip, it is right there.

A little further out of my reach (so I actually have to stand up for this one) are my punches and Big Shot dies.  Yes, I use punches or dies on just about everything I create – but something had to be further away and they just fit so nicely here don’t you think?

You can also catch a glimpse of my hanging racks that hold my glitter, embossing powder, and heat gun (which has newly been replaced by the new fabulous SU heat gun).

    All The Rest

I swear it doesn’t look this messy/cluttered in real life!  But I commandeered this Pottery Barn bookshelf and desk combo from my Hubby when we moved back into this house and it turned out to be the perfect size for my scrapbook albums and Stampin’ Up! catalogs!

    my craft room scrapbook shelves

So, the shelves are full of albums, premade cards (that is those boxes on the center middle shelf), catalogs, and misc extras.  I try to keep the desk area clean for overnight guests to use or to have a small area for picture taking.

And last, is the big pantry (yes, this bookcase was literally purchased to be a pantry when we lived in a smaller apartment!)  I LOVE how strong these shelves are, and with the doors, this became a perfect storage spot for my extra tools, class items, and 12×12 cardstock.  To be honest, I have about 2 shelves in this entire bookcase that I grab supplies from regularly; so it is great to have a place to put everything else and close the door to keep toddler hands away and extra mess contained!

    my craft room bookshelf

    What I Used For Storage

So, hopefully these pictures help give you some ideas for how to store your supplies.  I’ve found that since I reorganized, I get so much more done and with less hassle!  My big tip?

Keep the supplies you use most often within reach of your crafting chair!

But since you will need furniture and boxes for storage, these are the items that I love:

    1.  BESTA bookcases from IKEA – this is what I use for my cardstock storage, stamps, and tools.  It is found in the Living Room/Media Room section of IKEA and it is designed to hold heavy stuff, so it actually holds up well to the weight of my paper

    2.  BYGEL rails and baskets from IKEA – I found these to be cheap (like a few bucks a rod – cheap) and be PERFECT for punch storage.  I store my old “whale tail” black punches on the wall from these racks.  But even cooler is the $1.99 wire baskets that they sell to hang on the rods are an exact fit for the new slimline punches!  So, another easy organization move.

    3.  Magazine style holders for your paper – you can get them in wood, plastic, cardboard, etc from most organization stores (or online here and earn some Northwest Stamper reward punches at the same time!)

    4.  Stack and Store caddy from Stampin’ Up! – I haven’t seen anything like it but I cannot do without my caddies (check out the Stack and Store caddies online).  I love that I can stand there and spin my rack to see everything I have in the way of brads/buttons/eyelets/beads/etc, and so I use my stash!  Having items in a drawer just didn’t work for me.

Like I said, if you have any questions or are curious about something I didn’t point out specifically, leave me a comment and I’ll try to give you more details to try at home!

  • Creating a Scallop Border with Stamped Circles

starter circles from Everything EleanorAfter creating my Everything Eleanor swap cards for convention (this card), I was left with a bunch of circles that I punched out from the middle of the scallop circle image from the stamp set.  I think it is meant for journalling but since I had been trying to make a wreath, I didn’t need them on the card.  But I though they had to be useful for something so I saved them, even though I had no idea what to do with them.

Well, I started laying them out to make a polka dot background for a scrapbook page or card but wasn’t loving what I was creating so I started overlapping them and realized that I liked the fun effect of getting all the lines to match up so it looked like you had a continuous pattern even though you were using a bunch of different pieces.  So, I started adhering them together into strips to use as a scallop border.

front of scallop edge with circles

This could make a cute scallop trim for a card or scrapbook page depending on how many circles you adhere together.  In my case, I sponged the edge of each row and layered them together to be accents for my photo on a scrapbook page.

I tried to line up my rows so that the stamped lines matched up and it looked kind of like you had one continuous pattern.  As you can see, I didn’t always get it exactly right but I was more focused on using up my scraps than making sure everything was perfect! 🙂

I like how in the end it is a cool fluffy effect without looking too frilly or girly for a picture of my son from this past July.

I also tried to keep the page simple by only using 2 colors of cardstock, 2 colors of ink, 2 extra embellishments (Faceted buttons and Early Espresso Baker’s Twine), and one stamp set – Everything Eleanor.

And speaking of my son… after I had just finished the page and had gone upstairs to feed the baby, my son came up a few minutes later looking like this:

    Nicholas and the marker

After freaking out trying to figure out what he had eaten, he told me he had “colored with a marker!”  Yup, that same marker I had used to journal on that scrapbook page!  I got him to bring me the marker and the caps (that took 2 different requests).  But then my husband checked on where he had used the marker and told me

“He colored all over some paper on the table and the table”  **heart attack again!**

I asked what had happened to the scrapbook page and Scott said he hadn’t seen the scrapbook page.  So I raced downstairs and saw this:

    Nikos coloring adventure

I am very thankful to report that while he colored on much of my table, that he managed to miss the scrapbook page entirely!  Whew!

So there you have it, hopefully that gives you another idea for what you can do with your scraps.  Leave me a comment and let me know what you think of this idea!

  • Who Knew a Canning Jar Stamp Could Be So Cute?!

I was putting together this month’s Cards to Go kits and knew I wanted to break out a bunch of my new goodies from the Holiday catalog and so I started mixing and matching things from my shelves.  Now, sometimes this random grab and go process ends in something that looks like one of my cats ate a bunch of craft supplies and then spit it up on my table… but thankfully this was not one of those times!  Ha ha!

Well, I started with the Canning Jar stamp from the Perfectly Preserved stamp set.  Ever since I first saw this stamp set, I totally loved it – I just didn’t know what I would do with it.  Well, how about this:

I think it is sweet!  Oh, and I have some totally fun ideas that I’m going to be putting together later this week to share too.  But anyway, back to this card. 🙂

I had the 7/8” Cotton ribbon and I just had to experiment with stamping on it.  I would say SUCCESS!  (Plus, you can’t see the part of the ribbon that I played with before the ink dried and thus totally smeared the ink around the ribbon surface… but lets just say, lesson learned.)  Oh, and did you notice the Core’dinations cardstock too?

So, there you go… my first and definitily not my last, Perfectly Preserved card sample.  I knew there was a reason I loved it!

Coming up in tomorrow’s post:  I just had to share a scrapbook layout I created today along with what happens when your 2.5 yr old is unattended in your craft room and they discover the marker you used to journal in said scrapbook page!

    But until then….

  • Make Your Own Craft Tote with your Big Shot!

I’ll tel(l you up front that this project requires sewing, which means you know I didn’t make it myself. Smile  Instead, my fabulously talented friend Annie Lee created this for me using some of the Springtime Vintage fabric I gave her (and Yes! This is one of the fabrics that is on clearance right now for only $0.99!)

Isn’t it super awesome?!  I have it sitting by my craft table all the time.  Though what I love about it is that I feel like even the sewing newbie like me could make this!

    stampin up fabric caddy

See, the trick to me is cutting lots of squares out of the fabric using the Scallop Square Bigz die.  It gives you consistent sized pieces for your projects, its easy, and did you know you can run multiple layers of fabric through in one pass through your Big Shot?

Wha-Bam!!  Talk about speedy cutting for your sewing project, right? Smile

Anyway, the caddy is 2 squares long on each side with a divider down the middle.  Then divide one half again to give you the three compartments.  Does that make any sense?  I think, this took 22 Scallop Squares (one on the outside and one on the inside for each square you see).  She also stitched in some of the retired – so sad – stitched 5/8” Rose Red grosgrain ribbon.

Wanna see it again from another angle?  Oooh… Pretty!

    stampin up fabric caddy front

Now just think for a minute how expensive these totes are in the stores… now imagine how much money you save when you buy this fabric from the clearance rack for only $0.99 for 3 extra-large fat quarters.  Um, yeah, you would probably save enough to buy some goodies to stuff your bag with.  hee hee… or maybe that is what I would do.

Shop online to snag your fabric now

PS – Did you know, that if you decided to sign up with Stampin’ Up! as a demonstrator this month, not only would you get the $125 worth of product for $99, plus the free Halloween project kit, but you would also receive 20% off your order of fabric.  So, those $0.99 fabric sets just got knocked down to about $0.79!  Just saying!

  • Scrapbooking Sunday: Quick 8×8 Page Layouts

Alright, I’ve decided it is high time to resurrect Scrapbooking Sunday and there is no time like today to get started!

I thought I would share a couple layouts from my upcoming Scrapbook in a Night class that I’m holding at the end of the month.  The idea of this class is to take 1/2 of a Simply Scrappin’ Kit and with a few extra embellishments make a cute, 20 page album in no time!

So, here is the front page from the album… lets call this the title page. 🙂

Razzleberry Splash Scrapbook in a Day page 1

Then, we’ll make a number of 2-page spreads like this one:

Razzleberry Splash Scrapbook in a Day page 2

I have to admit, I normally am not a fan of stickers in scrapbooking but I forget that with some layering and a few Stampin’ Dimensionals, that you can come up with some fun accents.  Plus, they are super fast and easy to work with.  So, I guess I’m ok with them after all!

This class is the 8×8 format which helps you stretch your kit a bit further.  Normally I’m a 12×12 girl all the way.  But if that is you too, you could always complete the layouts and then mount them to a 12×12 piece of cardstock for your base – just step it up one step further!

So, if you are in the Seattle area, I’d love to have you join us for this class!  All the details are on my event calendar if you’d like to learn more.

If you are not local but want a kit, let me know and I’ll get you out a kit and photos of all the pages to be completed!  Email me at jennifer@nwstamper.com to confirm your spot.

Alright, well that is it for today.  Are you a scrapbooker and would like to continue seeing scrapbooking samples posted?  Leave me a comment and let me know! Hearing from you lets me know how often I should start posting my scrapbooking layout ideas. 🙂
