Paper Piecing with the Detailed Santa Thinlit for Christmas

Oh my goodness people!  We are officially less than 10 days until Christmas!!!  I was thinking I had all my shopping done and was totally on track for the holiday and the kids to be out of school for 2 1/2 weeks…..

NOPE!

I remembered some gifts I still need to get, my Christmas cards need to go in the mail, and I’m still cramming for the kids joint birthday party tomorrow instead of doing last minute prep before chaos descends on the house. Smile  And while I could spend Sunday trying to get caught up, its my birthday and I told my family that what I want to do for my birthday is to sit in my craft room and play!  I’m going to catch up on some scrapbooking, play with my new preorder stamps, and generally ignore chores and responsibilities for one day!

But while I’m madly making cookies and party cupcakes today, I thought I’d share this fun card.

You see, when I got the chance to play with the Detailed Santa thinlit, I loved the cool outline and scrollwork beard.  But I thought he would be even cooler colored in!  So, I grabbed some extra paper and got to work!

  1. Start by cutting out a white outline (so his beard will be white) and then cutting a white background piece the same size or slightly larger than the frame you cut out.
  2. Before you glue the white outline to the white background piece, grab your markers and do a little coloring!  I colored the glasses with my Basic Black marker and his lower lip with my Blushing Bride marker.  You see, if you color those pieces while the Detailed Santa piece is on scrap paper, if you go off the edge of the die cut shape, it only gets the scrap paper messy, not your card!
  3. Glue your santa onto the white background piece.
  4. Grab the paper you want to color in the inside of the santa – in this case, Red Glimmer paper for the hat and Blushing Bride for his face – and then run those small scraps through the Big Shot using the die.  You only need a paper piece that is just slightly larger than the area you want colored in.  Then you can take the cut out pieces and glue them into the detailed santa piece you glued down in step 2.
  5. Make him really stand out by grabbing some patterned paper – like this striped paper from the Presents & Pinecones designer paper – and cutting out the background piece and glueing it in to the open spaces of the frame.

TIP – make life easy on yourself!  Use the Big Shot Precision Plate as one of your cutting plate when cutting out Santa to ensure you get all the little pieces fully cut out.  Then grab the Big Shot Die Brush to quickly pop out all pieces with no muss or fuss!

The Santa face was my main visual, so I didn’t want to get too crazy or fancy for the rest of the card.  I figured I put in all the work to cut out and glue the pieces, that I wanted them to stand out!  So, I just added some of the Emerald Envy ruched ribbon along the bottom and added the sentiment from the Suite Season stamp set.  The set is retiring along with the designer paper, so don’t miss out on grabbing yours!

There is still time to give (or have your family get for you!) great crafty gifts!
